In the 1911 census he was aged 16, born Battersea, London, working in Straw Hat Factory, son of Walter Smith and Harriet Mary Pakes, resident 31, Malvern Road, Luton.Originally attested as 3901, 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, 9 September 1914, aged 19 years 9 months, height 5 feet 6½ inches, chest 31 inches, embodied as a Private 9 September 1914 served at Home until 9 December 1914, discharged due to flat feet, son of Walter Smith and Harriet Pakes, of 31 Malvern Road, Luton. In the 1891 census he was aged aged 5, born Luton, son of Frank and Sarah Parker, resident Tavistock Street, Luton; brother of Frank (above). In the 1901 census he was aged 15, born Luton, Straw Hat Warehousemans Massenger, son of Frank and Sarah Parker, resident 5, Tavistock Street, Luton. He joined in February 1917, and after his training served at various stations, where he was engaged on important duties with his unit. He was unable to obtain his transfer overseas and on August 1st, 1918, died at No. 1 Eastern Genera! Hospital.

In the 1881 census he was aged 10, born Dunstable, a scholar, son of Daniel and Esther Parkins, resident 61, St Marys Street, Dunstable, Luton, Bedfordshire. Educated at Chew's Charity School, Dunstable (boys) admitted 17 May 1883 aged 12 years, left 28 May 1885. In the 1911 census he was aged 39, born Dunstable, Beds, a General Labourer, a widower, son of Daniel Parkins (a widower), resident 7, Bailey Street, Luton. He was already serving on the outbreak of war in August 1914, and in 1915 proceeded to France. there he fought in the Battles of Hill 6o, Ypres, Festubert, Coos and Arras, and many other engagements until September 17th, 1917, when he was kilted in action at Lens. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

P.154 Sjt. H. Parks, Rif. Brig.
For conspicuous gallantry in action. When all the officers of his company had become casualties, Serjeant Parks led the third attack on enemy trenches with great bravery and skill, and gave a fine example of devotion to duty.

Birth registered in the October to Decmeber Quarter 1880 in Luton. Married. Resident 102 Crawley Road, Luton. In the 1911 census he was aged 31, born Leagrave, an Accountant, married to Agnes Parsons with one daughter, resident 85, Dallow Road, Luton. Buried in LUTON GENERAL CEMETERY, Bedfordshire. He joined in May 1916, and in the following August was sent to France. After a short period of service on the Western Front, during which he was engaged on important transport duties, he was invalided home suffering from fever, in December 1916. He died in hospital at Cambridge on the 34th of the same month, and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

He rendered very valuable service throughout hostilities, and carried out his work in a highly commendable way. He died on November 11th, 1918, through ill-health brought about by war service.

He volunteered in September 1914, and in the following July was drafted to the Dardanelles. He was engaged in the fighting at the landing at Suvla Bay and many subsequent engagements until transferred to Salonika in October 1915. He was in action at Monastir, where in December of the same year he was reported missing, and later presumed to have been unfortunately killed on that date. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
