CHEVELEY WAR MEMORIAL

There is a memorial cross near the churchyard of St Mary and the Holy Ghost in Heaven Church, High Street Cheveley. It takes the form of a tall column on an octagonal base that sits on 2 square bases. There are decorated bronze panels on the octagonal section. There are 22 names listed for World War 1 and 2 for World War 2. A further memorial contains a detailed list of all men who served during World War I and is to be found in the Church porch, it includes details of all overseas service and takes the form of a wooden Triptych to which two doors are hinged; it is topped with a triangular "roof". A panel with a shelf below this contains the dedication and the central section has been created in the form of a cross. The names are either side of the cross.. The names have been sorted here into alphabetical order within conflict.

Died as a Japanese Prisoner of War 12 September 1944, captured at Singapore 15 February 1942, being transferred to Japan aboard Rakuyo Maru when the ship was sunk off East Hainan Island when torpedoed by U.S. Submarine "Sealion". Aged 28. Born 4 May 1916. Son of Thomas and Edith M. Turner, of Horton Kirby, Kent. Reisdent 6, Broad Green, Cheveley, Newmarket. A Labourer by trade. Next of kin his grandfather Mr. R.
