 KING'S
SCHOOL, ELY - 1914-1918 World
War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed informationCompiled and copyright © 2003 Martin Edwards & Cliff Brown

   The
Memorial took the form of an English Oak Wall Tablet placed in the Dining Hall.
The designers were Messrs. Maile & Co., of Euston Road, London. The number
of names inscribed on the Roll of Honour is Twenty Four. Special gifts of Communion
Plate, Altar Vases and Candlesticks were made to the School Chapel. In 1925 the
King's School, Ely used the names of four Eleans who lost their lives in the First
World War to name their games houses, thus Boultbee, Burns, Ivatt and Ingle go
down in the annals of the school history and there are fond memories of playing
for the BIBI Cup for games. 1914

          | VERRALL | Charles
              Royston | Private
235040, 157th Depot, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Wounded and died 12th of March 1918. Born the 22nd of May 1883,
attended KSE from 1895 to 1899. He was a journalist and involved
in the South African War 1900. Buried in Grangegorman Military Cemetery,
County Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Grave CE. 675. |
          | WOODROFFE | N
              F | There
were two Woodroffe's at the school Norman Frederic and Walter Gordon,
brothers. However Norman Frederic does not appear as having died,
but Walter Gordon does and the age matches up [at first assumed
that it was Norman Leslie Woodroffe]. W.G. Woodroffe was born in
January 1894, but in the Register of the King's School Ely it is
his brother who was supposedly killed in the first World War. Norman
is supposed to have won the Legion of Honeur and the Croix de Guerre
so if one swaps the information for the two boys the theory is that
it is Walter Gordon who died. Walter
Gordon Woodroffe, Captain, 7th Battalion (Territorial), Middlesex
Regiment. Killed in action Saturday 16th September 1916. Age 22.
Son of Walter Henry and Mildred M. Woodroffe, of 5, Bedford Row,
High Holborn, London. Awarded Croix de Guerre with Palm (France).
