Search Korean War - British Casualties

This database contains details of British casualties, either dead or wounded, prisoners of war and VC winners. The details are drawn from the war graves in Korea (see Korean War Graves) and lists published by The Times newspaper during the war (this is accessible on-line through most UK libraries although you may need a reader's ticket). Other details drawn from war memorials and local newspapers and other written sources have been included as they have been found. Also from Korea 1950-1953 Prisoners of War The British Army by Peter Gaston. The details have been collated into a single, searchable entries, within the database, wherever possible. This does not mean that there are not anomalies, that entries have not been duplicate or that the information here is 100% accurate, please let us know if you have facts we have wrong or not available.

The Korean War was the military test of the United Nations and also the last martial adventure of the old Commonwealth. The American Department of Defence acknowledges that almost 40,000 of its servicemen died, either in battle or of other causes. British casualties were 1,078 killed in action, 2,674 wounded and 1,060 missing or taken prisoner.

The true casualty figures for the North and South Koreans and Chinese will never be known. It is estimated that some 46,000 South Korean soldiers were killed and over 100,000 wounded. The Chinese are estimated by the Pentagon as having lost over 400,000 killed (including Mao Tse-tung's son) and 486,000 wounded, with over 21,000 captured. The North Koreans lost about 215,000 killed, 303,000 wounded and over 101,000 captured or missing.

The Korean War is often referred to as “The Forgotten War”, here is a Collection of British Pathe films from the Korean War. This is an external source and will open in a new window.

Note: A man reported "Missing" did not necessarily die but there will be no report of his return although he may have. A man may be listed here as killed or died according to a Newpaper Report but this may not be factual.
