BRADWELL BAY WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2012
The R.A.F. Bradwell Bay memorial is to be found on the site of a former
airfield at Bradwell Bay, Maldon, Essex. The memorial takes the form
of a representation of a crashed Mosquito aircraft with its nose buried
in the ground and its tail in the air that is set on an elevated stone
platform, flanked by two angled panels bearing names; the inscription
panel is in front of the aircraft and a glazed map of the airfield
at the rear. The memorial states 121 names with an additional two
names on an extra stone but the count comes to 130 names of
Air Force personnel who gave their lives including the two extra.
The memorial
has many anomalies with the entries, misspelled names, ranks and countries
are a few which have been noted with the specific entries. Although
it is meant to be in alphabetical order there are odd names inserted
into the list which are out of order.
The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of
research and reading.
Historical
note: The central area of the current airfield was first laid down
before World War 2 as a grass-surfaced landing ground for the nearby
Dengie firing ranges off the coast before being rebuilt from 1940
onwards as an enlarged Royal Air Force station with concrete runways,
hangars and ancillary buildings. The station is unique as it was the
only fighter station where the Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation
(FIDO) was used.
