OTTERBOURNE AND ALLBROOK WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands in front of the churchyard of St Matthew, Otterbourne on land donated by Tankerville Chamberlayne of Cranbury Park whose younger son’s name is amongst those commemorated. It is a white stone square-sided structure surmounted by a cross. St Matthew’s church contains a plaque listing the World War 1 names which are on the war memorial and a separate plaque commemorating the son of a former vicar who was killed in World War 1 but whose name is not on the war memorial. The World War 2 names are on a separate stone which has been added to the memorial with 1939 inscribed on one end and 1945 on the other but no additional inscription.

Company Sergeant Major 3/4667 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died 28/03/1918. Aged 37. Son of William and Rebecca Ball and husband of Esther Olive Ball of 1 Providence Hill, Bursledon. Commemorated Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez.
BOWER George Henry
Gunner 72365 56th Bty. Royal Field Artillery. Died 04/11/1914. Aged 19. Son of John and Charlotte Bower of 5 Highcliffe Rd, Highcliffe, Winchester. Commemorated Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
CHAMBERLAYNE Thomas Edmund Onslow
Lieutenant 73rd Brigade. Royal Field Artillery. Died 18/08/1916. Aged 23. Son of Tankerville and Edith Chamberlayne of Cranbury Park, Hants. Educated at Winchester College and Merton College, Oxford. Previously wounded at the Battle of Loos, Sept., 1915. Commemorated Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz.

Lance Corporal 202750 2nd/4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died 22/02/1919. Aged 32. Son of Harry and Louisa Cooper of Penshurst, Kent and husband of Mrs. G. A. Cooper, of Felmingham, Norwich. Commemorated Cologne Southern Cemetery.

Private 33559, 1st/7th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died 26/12/1918. Aged 35. Son of Alfred and Emma Edwards of Godalming, Surrey. Commemorated Dueville Communal Cemetery Extension.
ELGEE Hugh Francis
Captain South Wales Borderers. Died on 06/07/1915. Aged 35. Son of the former Otterbourne vicar Rev. Francis and Mrs. Elgee. Commemorated Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery Sp. Mem. C. 126 and on a plaque in St Matthews church Otterbourne, but not on the Otterbourne war memorial.

Private PO/14195 H.M.S. "Invincible." Royal Marine Light Infantry. Died 31/05/1916 at the battle of Jutland. Aged 33. Son of Jane May (formerly Herridge) of 2 Wardle Rd, Highbridge, Eastleigh, Hants in 1916. Brother of William whose name is also on this memorial. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

JONES-BATEMAN Lloyd Newton
Colonel 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died 25/07/1917. Aged 42. Son of Rowland and Jessie Jones-Bateman. Buried In Simla Cemetery, India. Commemorated Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial.
JUDD Thomas
Bombadier 618044 1st/1st Battalion, Hants Battalion, Royal Horse Artillery. Died 20/04/1920. Aged 28. Son of Samuel and Alice Judd and husband of Maud Judd of 3 Ivy Cottages, Otterbourne. Commemorated St Matthew, Otterbourne. Not on CWGC database. He was a Territorial and served in Egypt and Palestine from 1916 to 1919. Discharged May 1919 as unfit due to Pulmonary Tuberculosis, contracted whilst on service, from which he died in April 1920.

TROWELL Robert James
Royal Navy. Believed to be Robert James Trowell of 10 Allbrook Hill who died in March 1949 age 23 from Tuberculosis contracted whilst on naval service. Husband of Peggy Trowell. He died after the CWGC cut off date for WW2 of 31 Dec 1947 which would explain his absence from the CWGC database. No information on his naval service is currently available.
