The Southwick and Boarhunt war memorial is to be found in St James without
the Priory Church, Southwick. It takes the form of two linked brass
plates plaques mounted on marble. Wooden brackets each side support
flags, the left side - red and white ensigns and the right side - Union
flag and RAF flag. There are 15 names for World War 1 and 2 for World
War 2.

Henry
aka Harry Webb was born in Wickham, Hampshire in 1878. His parents
were George and Elizabeth Webb.
At the time of the 1881 census Henry and his parents were living
in High Street, Wickham. His father, George, was a gardener.
In 1896, aged 18, Henry joined the Royal Garrison Artillery. His
Regimental Number was 14340
Henry married Ada Ellen Crook in Boarhunt in 1900.
In 1901 Henry and Ada were living in Cottage Grove, Gosport. Henry
was a corporal in the army. A year later their first child Beatrice
Lily was born in Seaforth Liverpool. The following year they had
a son named Herbert Henry who was born in Southwick, Hampshire.
A second daughter, Georgina Ruby Ellen was born in 1906, also in
Southwick. Kathleen Nora was born three years later in North Boarhunt,
Hampshire.
Sometime between the 1901 and the 1911 census Henry left the army.
In 1911 the family was living in North Boarhunt where Henry was
employed as a labourer general. Henry and Ada’s fifth child’s
birth was registered in Fareham in 1913. His name was Leslie George.
Henry re-enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery, Royal Regiment
of Artillery (R.G.A.) Corps in November 2016. His home address was
Staple Cross, Southwick and his occupation was Dairyman. His service
number was 282244.
Henry was killed in action in France on the 14th September 1918
when he was 39 years old and is buried in Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery
Extension, Pas de Calais.
Henry’s effects were returned to his wife. They included his
pipe, tobacco pouch, six pieces of pencil, razor strap, comb and
watch chain together with the equivalent of £2 18s 8d in francs.
In the records there was a letter from his wife asking how she could
get the money as it hadn’t been returned with his effects.
She had five children and most likely needed every penny she could
get.
Ada never remarried and died in 1959 aged 83. |
