There
are two new War Memorials. Both dedicated in 2018. One is dedicated
in the former mining community of Aylesham, near Dover and Canterbury
in Kent.
The official
unveiling of the War Memorial, which is located in the square gardens
at the centre of Aylesham village, was made on Sunday 4th November
2018, and was dedicated by Father Geoffrey, priest in charge of St.
Finbarr's Church, in the village of Aylesham. Following the unveiling
of the stone and cross War Memorial, the blessing of the new Miners'
Memorial was also made on the same day. The new Colliery Heapstead
memorial had been officially unveiled the day before on Saturday 3rd
November 2018. Many local residents attended both ceremonies and ex-services
personnel were also in attendance. The stone and cross were made by
Alan Middlemiss and William Hirst of Cantuari at Adisham, with the
engraving by Neil Scrivener of Aylesham.
The
two memorials are part of a memorial garden that has cost around £54,000,
with contributions of £8,000 each from Barrat Homes, Perisimmon
Homes, Gallagher and Dover District Council. The parish council funded
the remaining amount. Four new memorial benches also form part of
the memorial garden, with silhouettes depicting scenes of soldiers
during the Great War 1914-1918, and also scenes of coal miners working
underground.
