CHILHAM'S LOSS

The people of Chilham and district have received a profound shock in the death, as a result of enemy action, on Friday, of their most loved personality and helper. Mrs. Ethel Frances Hay, aged 74, of Robin's Croft, The Hill, Chilham, and widow of the late Colonel Charles Hay.

Mrs. Hay had lived in the village for over 30 years, and she was the recognised leader of all its activities. Among her many interests was, chiefly, the church, for which she worked devotedly. She was vicar's warden, a speaker throughout the diocese for the Mothers' union, head of the Bible Class, director of the local branch of the Girls' Friendly Society, the Working Party, was a member of the Women's Institute, and organizer of the Bellringers' Association, to which she gave a supper new year. She conducted the Welfare Centre at Chilham Lees, gave unstinted service to the Red Cross and was a representative of the Kent and Canterbury Contributory Scheme

A short time ago her stepson Major- General C. J. B. Hay, aged 63, second son of Col. Charles Hay. and Commander-General of the Lucknow district, was a victim, with his wife, to enemy action.

The choral funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, by the Rev. J. Hilton- Spratt (rector), assisted by the Rev. M. L. Man (rector of Chartham). Psalm xii.. "I will lift up mine eyes" was chanted, and also "God be in my head." Every branch of Chilham's village and church life was represented, and the grave in the parish churchyard, close to Mrs. Hay's own garden, was massed with exquisite flowers.
