ALTHORPE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

There are several memorials in Althorpe. The external memorial is to be found opposite the St oswald Parish Church, Main Street, Althorpe. It takes the form of a rough hewn pillar mounted on a plinth with a stepped base, the whole being surrounded by a chain linked fence and posts on a concrete base with a paved pathway leading up to the memorial. The masons and buoldrs were Messrs. Sissons and Son. The memorial was ynveiled by Lt.-Col. Harold Graham Wilson (D.S.o.), and was dedicated by local clergymen 24 September 1921. There are 16 names listed for World War 1 and 8 names for World War 2. Those on the external memorial and internal plaques are marked '†', those on the internal plaques only are marked '‡'. Within theparish church of church of St Oswald are two further memorial plaques, one for World War 1 (18 names) and one for World War 2 (8 names). There is also a memorial window commemorating the Stephenson family with three names listed, these are marked with a 'µ'.

Only son of John and Phillis E Barnard of The Alley, Badsey, WOR (as CWGC, of Althorpe, Lincs as 1911). Born Badsey, WOR, enlisted Epworth, Lincs and resident Badsey, WOR. Commemorated Lonsdale Cemetery. IX.G.3.
BARTON Herbert
† Private 31704. 3rd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 11th April 1917, aged 19 years. Son of Richard and Sarah Ann Barton of Pilfrey Farm, Belton, Lincs. Commemorated Althorpe (St Oswald) Churchyard.
COLLEY James
† Military Medal. Private 240449. 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2nd November 1917, aged 31 years. Son of Joseph and Eliza Colley of Derrythorpe, Althorpe, Lincs. Born Keadby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Althorpe, Lincs. Commemorated Philosophe British Cemetery. III.A.13.
COWLING John William
† Private 2352. 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of gun shot wound to neck at 9th July 1915 at 13 General Hospital, Boulogne. Son of William and Martha Matilda Cowling. Born 11th June 1893 Keadby (as SDGW, born Althorpe as census), enlisted 4th September 1914 Scunthorpe and resident Crowle, Lincs. Commemorated Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. VIII.B.59.

CRACKLE William
† Corporal 13585. 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 14th October 1915, aged 22 years. Son of Smith and Dinah Crackle of Derrythorpe, Lincs. Born Althorpe, enlisted Epworth and resident Derrythorpe, Lincs. Commemorated White City Cemetery. A.11.
DARLING William
‡ Rifleman C/12467. 21st Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 17th September 1916. Son of John Richard and Emily Darling. Born 1890 Wakefield, enlisted Goole and resident Pontefract, YKS. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 13A and 13B.
DENT Arthur
† Boy 1st Class J/21227, Royal Navy. HMS ‘Bulwark’. Died 26th November 1914, aged 17 years. Son of (the late) Alfred and Adelaide Dent of Station Road, Keadby, Lincs. Commemorated Portsmouth Naval Memorial. 3.
DUNDERDALE Tom
† Lance Corporal 9865. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action Gallipoli 7th August 1915, aged 20 years. Son of Joseph Abbott and Mary Elizabeth Dunderdale of Station Road, Keadby, Lincs. Born Thorne, YKS, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Keadby, Lincs. Commemorated Helles Memorial. Panel 44 to 46.
MASON Joseph William

PULLEN Albert Victor
† Pullen on memorial, Pullan on civilian and military records. Private 35260. 7th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, attached 7th Battalion Rifle Brigade, formerly 4526 Durham Light Infantry. Killed in action 2nd April 1918, aged 25 years.
