husband was one of my best officers, rful under any circumstances,
thoroughly efficient in all his work, and one of nicest fellows

talking about him, and all the splendid things he had done with
the regiment. It is a sad loss to us all, and his death is a bitter

AIR
ACCIDENT 1968

Extract

All
our sympathies go out to the seven airmen lost in the air crash
over Holt last week. In particular may I express grief at the
loss of one married airman, Flt.-Lt. J. Flabber (sic), aged 25.
Our Government permitted him to join our armed forces and, if
necessary, give his life for this country. But had he been a world-class
athlete invited to take part in the forthcoming Olympic Games
he would have found us anything but friendly. He was born in South
Africa.

PLANE
CRASH: CREW MEN ARE NAMED
The
seven crew men killed when two bombers collided over Norfolk on
Monday night were named yesterday.
An R.A.F. spokesman in London said the two aircraft —a Victor
of Strike Command from R.A.F. Marham, Norfolk, and an R.A.F. Canberra
from Bruggen, Germany—were on different exercises.
“There
is no question of the two being on one exercise, or of refuelling
in the air,” he said.
The
crew of the Victor was Flight Lieutenant W. A. Gallienne (36),
a married man from Chigwell, Essex, (the captain); Flying Officer
R. S. Morton, (26) of Baldock, Herts., (co-pilot); Flight: Lieutenant
K. J. Peacock (31), married, of Colstock, Cornwall (navigator),
and Squadron Leader M. Doyle (39), married (air electronics officer).
The
Canberra crew was Flight Lieutenant J. Slabber (25), a married
man whose home is in South Africa (captain): Flying Officer S.
Cowie (24), married, from Bridlington, Yorkshire (navigator),
and Flying Officer J. H. Woolnough (24), single, of Loughton,
Essex (also a ‘navigator).
The
mid-air collision occurred near the market town of Holt, and the
main wreckage was found on farmland near Holt Hall, a Norfolk
County Council educational establishment. No civilians were involved.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said no bombs were aboard either
aircraft.

Two
RAF planes in night crash riddle
Two
RAF planes—a Victor and a Canberra— crashed in flames
in North Norfolk late last light, scattering burning wreckage
around the village of Holt. A police spokesman said six bodies
had been recovered and they were looking for a seventh.
All
the dead were aircrew. “We have had no reports of any civilian
being involved.”
Eye
witnesses described the aircraft as dropping out of the sky “like
great ball of fire.” Bits of wreckage landed in the grounds
of Kelling Hospital, but no damage was done.
The
Defence Ministry said earlier today: “It is reported that
a mid-air collision look place at approximately 10 p.m. last night
between a Victor aircraft of RAF Strike Command and a Canberra
aircraft of RAF Germany.
“It
was in the area of Holt, Norfolk, approximately 10 miles south-east
of Wells. Next of kin will be informed, and a board of inquiry
will be convened.” The Ministry spokesman that there were
no bombs of any sort aboard either aircraft.
FIRES
A
Norfolk Police spokesman said. “There not appear to be any
casualties on the ground.”
Fire
engines were called to deal with a number of fires which started
on nearby wooded grassland at Kelling Heath.
The
main wreckage was found on farmland near Holt Hall, a Norfolk
County Council educational establishment.
EXPLOSION
At
Kelling Hospital, a spokesman said staff heard a “terrific
explosion” in the sky at about 9.45.
Student
Matthew Higham (22), who lives at Thornage, two miles from Holt,
said he saw the aircraft over the village looking like “an
incredible ball of fire”.
He said: “Suddenly the whole garden was lit up. We ran outside
and there was terrific glow. Suddenly appearing from a cloud was
this incredible ball of fire.”
FRIGHTENING
“It
was revolving and there was a noise like thunder. The whole village
ran out to look. It was just like daylight for over a minute as
the ball passed overhead.”
“It
was very frightening.”

Ball
of fire over village as RAF Vulcan crashes
Birmingham Post Reporters
The
wreckage of two R A F bombers plunged in a ball of fire on to
a village in Norfolk late last night. scattering blazing pieces
over the homes of 2,000. Norfolk police said that two planes were
involved, but no confirmation was available on whether they had
collided in mid-air.
A
wing of a Vulcan bomber plummetted into the main street of the
village of Holt, and two engines fell near the Railway Hotel.
All five of the crew on board the Vulcan died, but no one in the
village was hurt, according to first police reports.
Mr.
Raymond Buller, licensee of the Railway Hotel, said: “There
was a tremendous explosion like a plane going through the sound
barrier.
“Then
wreckage came showering down on the village, dislodging tiles
from the houses. There are bits of the plane scattered all over
the place.”
Mr.
Buller said there was a solid line of cars blocked through the
village, and added: “The police have escorted one ambulance
and fire engine after another through.”
He
said the main body of the plane had crashed on a farm outside
Holt.
Mrs. D. Tuck, wife of the curate of Holt, said: "There was
a terrific explosion and the sky was ablaze with light. Pieces
of the plane whistled down and some fell quite close to our house.
'
“There
was a thunderstorm on at the time, and the plane could have been
struck by lightning.”
Despite
the shower of wreckage, miraculously, nobody in the village was
hurt.
Mr.
Buller said: “A number of the customers set off to see if
they could help, but the van they were in got a burst tyre from
a piece of wreckage on the road.”
Another
eye-witness, Mrs. Catherine Dixon, a farmer's wife, of Church
Farm, near Holt, said: “There was an enormous explosion,
and a ball of fire falling out of the sky. The whole countryside
was lit up by the glare.”
The
extent of the damage to the town was not immediately known, but
Norfolk County fire engines stood by at Holt.
Two
Vulcans in collision
It
was raining heavily when the crash happened, and a spokesman at
Kelling Hospital, near Holt, said that bits of blazing wreckage
had landed in the hospital grounds.
Bodies
from the crash were being taken to Holt Hall, a Norfolk County
Council educational establishment.
Mrs.
Christine Gotts, who lives at Holt Garage with her brother, Mr.
Basil Elsden, who runs the town's ambulance, said: “I understand
that two Vulcan bombers were in a midair collision and that five
crew are dead.
“The
whole place lit up like a sunset and all of a sudden I saw little
specks and then there was a burst of flames. You could hear the
metal falling everywhere.
“Most
of the pieces fell on the outskirts of the town. As far as we
know no buildings were hit and no-one else was hurt.”
Mr.
Peter Mills, licensee of the White Lion, Holt, said: "There
was something like an explosion, associated with a long rumble
as if it were thunder. It seems that the plane was probably struck
by lightning.
“
fuselage came down a quarter of a mile away near Holt Hall, a
school, and there was a small fire. Another quarter of a mile
away there were fires in two fields, presumably due to separate
parts of the pane falling. Part of the wing fell on a pighouse."
