received his secondary education at Stratford Technical High
School, passing the matriculation in 1938. He played football,
Tennis and swimming. His civilian occupation was that of a
clerk in the Social Security Dept., New Plymouth, when in
May 1941 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand
Air Force.
Pilot Officer Jeffares was enlisted in aircrew on the 29th
November 1941 at the Ground Training School, Levin, and was
posted on the 10th January 1942 to No.2 Elementary Flying
Training School, Bell Block, where he commenced his flying
training. He proceeded on the 8th March 1942 to No.1 Service
Flying Training School, Wigram. Here on the 5th May 1942 he
was awarded his flying badge. He was promoted to sergeant
on the 11th July 1942, to flight sergeant on the 15th May1943
to warrant officer on the 15th May 1944, and commissioned
in the rank of pilot officer on the 28th May 1944. Meanwhile,
on the 20th July 1942 he had embarked for the United Kingdom.
Pilot Officer Jeffares arrived at No.3 Personnel Reception
Centre, Bournemouth, on the 1st September 1942, and posted
on the 25th September to No.6 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit,
Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. Early in November his
training here was interrupted while he attended an instrument
flying course with No.1517 Beam Approach Training Flight,
Wattisham, Suffolk. At the conclusion of this course he resumed
his training with the Advanced Flying Unit, now at Windrush,
Oxfordshire. He proceeded on the 23rd December 1942 to No.21
Operational Training Unit, first at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire,
and later at Edgehill, Oxfordshire. With this unit he crewed-up
and completed his training on Wellington bomber aircraft.
On the 28th March 1943 as pilot of a Wellington bomber Pilot
Officer Jeffares left England on posting to No.40 Squadron,
Gadabia, Libya.
The journey was made with Halts at Gibralta and Castel Benito,
Libya. Gadabia was reached on the 1st April 1943 after a journey
of seventeen hours thirty minutes flying. This journey by
air counted as two operational flights. On arrival at Gadabia,
Pilot Officer Jeffares reported to No. 40 Squadron, and with
this squadron as captain of a Wellington bomber, Pilot Officer
Jeffares took part in forty-one operational flights bringing
his total of forty-three. These operations included attacks
on Sfax (3), Tunis, Soliman and Narbeul in Tunisia, Messina
(2), Sciacca, Trapani and Gerbini in Sicily; Naples, Pantellaria,
San Giovanni (2), Montecorvino, Aquino, Viterbo, Torre Annunciata

Unit, Qastina, Palestine, for duty as an instructor. On the
6th August 1944 he was posted to No.37 Squadron, Calopachino,

These-twenty one operations comprised attacks on Valence and

a sortie minelaying in the Danube.
Pilot Officer Jeffares was captain of a Wellington bomber
which took off on the 21st October 1944 to attack the marshalling
yards at Maribor, Yugoslavia. The aircraft failed to return
to its base and all members of the crew including Pilot Officer
Jeffares were classified as missing.
A member of the crew, Pilot Officer Ayton, a fellow New Zealander,
who was taken prisoner stated on his return, after the termination
of hostilities ,that when he baled out Pilot Officer Jeffares
was alright, but after he left the aircraft he heard an explosion.
Pilot Officer Ayton baled out at 7000ft in the locality of
Gospi in Croatia, Yugoslavia. The aircraft was then badly
damaged, one engine being on fire, and there was approximately
three feet off the tail plane.
In due course Pilot Officer Jeffares was officially presumed
to have lost his life on the 21st October 1944, as the result
of Air Operations.
