FROM
DUSK TO
DAWN
NIGHT FIGHTERS OF
NORTH-EAST
A
recent achievement of a Beaufighter squadron has made it the
second top-scoring night squadron in Fighter Command. This
squadron, which used to seek out the enemy raiders in Blenheims
in the early days of the war has now destroyed 53 enemy aircraft
and damaged many others.
They
have recently shot down large proportion of the small number
of enemy aircraft which approached the North-East Coast. Two
of these were destroyed by Flight-Lieut. John Ellis Willson,
former commercial air lines pilot on the London-Paris who
scored a “double” for the second time. His first
two-in-one-night were destroyed on the night of March 11-12
Flying Officer Bunch as observer. His second two were shot
down on the night of March 15-16 when Pilot Officer Holloway
was his observer.
The squadron, which is led by Wing Commander A. R. Moon, A.F.C.,
has a reputation for producing “aces.” Some of
the front-rank night fighters who are former members of the
squadron include such well-known names as Group Capt. Pike,
Wing Commander Wight- Boycott, Wing Commander Colbeck-Welch
and Wing Commander Dotteridge (who now commands the squadron
formerly led by Wing Commander Max Aitken).
Appropriately
enough, for a squadron which was eventually to help in the
defence of North-East England, it was formed at Catterick
on October 4, 1939. Grimly, but pointedly enough, the squadron’s
crest is a death-head moth. Its motto is: “From Dusk
to Dawn.”

CHARLWOOD.
AWARDED BAR TO D.F.C. Acting Squadron Leader John Ellis Willson,
D.F.C. (89058), R.A.F.V.R., No. 153 Squadron (since deceased),
has just been awarded a Bar to his D.F:C. (with effect from
August 26th, 1943). Born in 1912 at Bowes Park, his home is
at Charlwood. He enlisted in 1935. and was commissioned in
1940. He was awarded the D.F.C. in May, 1943. This officer,
states the citation, has destroyed nine enemy aircraft by
night. Since his arrival in the North African theatre of war
in June, he has destroyed three Heinkel III's and a Junkers
88. On one occasion, in August, 1943, while engaged in intercepting
an enemy attack on Bizerta he took part in a sharp burst of
fire, the enemy aircraft caught fire and dived vertically
into the sea. After this combat Squadron Leader Willson made
contact with another enemy aircraft which he pursued through
the anti-aircraft defences over Bizerte and eventually shot
down in flames.
