Killed in action in Camel D6624 flying over Ostend 12 August 1918.
Aged 21. Native of Bath, Somerset. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C.Gathorne
Hill, of Claverton Manor, Bath. Richard was born 24 May 1897 at
Poole Court in Yate. He was the son of Charles Gathorne and Gertrude
Isabella Hill, Charles Hill was a partner in the Bristol shipbuilding
company Charles Hill & Sons. The family also owned Hazel Manor
in Compton Martin and Claverton Manor in Bath. Richard was the youngest
of three boys and had two sisters. His brother Hugh Maurice was
badly wounded in the retreat from Mons in September 1914. Richard
attended Eton college from 1910-15 and enlisted in 1916. He was
killed whilst flying at Ostend on 12 August 1918, aged 21. His parents
erected the screen in St Hugh’s Church, Charterhouse in his
memory. The village hall in Compton Martin was built in his memory
and to commemorate those from the village who lost their lives.
No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS FLYING SERVICES MEMORIAL,
Pas de calais, France. Also commemorated on the UBley War memorial. |

35959, 1st Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regiment).
Killed in action 18 September 1918. Born Butcombe, Somerset, residet
Bristol, enlisted Weston-Super-Mare. Robert Sampson was born in
Butcombe in 1899, son of William and Thirza Sampson. The family
later moved to Grove Cottage, Bath Road, Blagdon where father William
ran a newsagent’s shop and was the local barber. Robert was
one of eleven children, seven boys and four girls. His brother Edward
also served. Up to the time Robert joined the Forces he was working
in the village as a motor mechanic. He enlisted with the Wiltshire
Regiment in 1917. After first being reported missing his death was
later confirmed. He was killed in action in France on 18th September
1918, aged 19. Sadly his parents were informed after the Armistice
celebrations. Buried in TARGELLE RAVINE BRITISH CEMETERY, VILLERS-GUISLAIN,

9293, 1st Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment formerly 11th Battalion.
Killed in action 30 November 1917. Born and resident Alveston, Warwickshire,
enlisted Stratford-On-Avon. Alec was born in Alveston, Warickshire
in 1892. In the 1911 census Alec was working for Isaac Bath in Court
Farm, Blagdon. He enlisted in Stratford on Avon in 1915. He was
killed in action 30 November 1917. The Weston super Mare Gazette
22 December 1917 reported he was killed by a sniper and the report
also announced the death of Edward J Coates killed a short time
after his parents received the notice of the death of their eldest
son Richard. Buried in WINDMILL BRITISH CEMETERY, MONCHY-LE-PREUX,
Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row G. Grave 20. |

Born Denny, Stirlingshire, resident Priddy Wells, Somerset, enlisted Stirling. Son of Robert Tunstall (a Mill Worker). Husband of Agnes May Tunstall, of Blackford, Cheddar, Somerset. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M. - Collected by his widow in a ceremony in College Green Bristol). In the 1911 census he was aged 27, born Alloa, Clackmannanshire, a Gamekeeper, boarding at Yoxter Farm, Charterhouse, Blagdon, Bristol, Charterhouse, Somerset where his future wife was also resident. Resident Charter House, Blagdon, at time of marriage. Married, aged 28, Agnes May Shipsey in Blagdon, Somerset, 1 January 1912. Buried in LEVEL CROSSING CEMETERY, FAMPOUX, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row A. Grave 60. TYHere is also a plaque in his memory in St. Hugh's Church, Charterhouse. The plaque reads: Sacred

| WOOD | Leofric | Private
2049, 11th Battaion, Australian Infantry A.I.F. In April 1912 Leofric
travelled to Weston Australia to join his brother Hilderic. He enlisted
in the Commonwealth Expeditionary Force in January 1915 and, after
three months training in Perth, sailed for Cairo and Gallipoli,
landing in June 1915. After six weeks in the trenches he contracted
dysentery and was transferred to a hospital ship. He died on 2nd
August 1915 aged 20 and was buried at sea. Leofric was born in 1894,
the fourth son of Frederic and Amy Elizabeth (nee Pizey) Wood. Frederic
Wood was a solicitor in Wrington who later lived in Swiss Cottage,
Sladacre Lane in Blagdon. Frederic chose names ending in 'ic' for
his sons - Leofric's brothers were Wilgric, Yetric, Godric and Hilderic.

a general Labourerl, son of John and Georgianna Young, resident
Blagdon, Somerset. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL,

Charterhouse, Somerset in 1894, the son of William Thiery and Agnes
Young .In the 1911 census George was living in Charterhouse with
his parents and younger sister. His father was a farm bailiff. No

Died flying in an Avro Lancaster I, serial number PD273, having
taken off from R.A.F. Wickenby on night operations to Stettin when
his aircraft was lost 30 August 1944; five crew members became Prisoners
of War. Buried in POZNAN OLD GARRISON CEMETERY, Poland. Plot 6.

from R.A.F. Little Snoring, Norfolk flying a Mosquito II, serial
number HJ707, when he was killed in action when shot down by a night
fighter at 23,000 ft just north of Hanover during a Serrate patrol,
15 February 1944; the navigator survived and was captured. Aged
32. Born 21 September 1911. Son of Donald Michael and Mary Elizabeth
Gracie, of Dorking, Surrey; husband of Patricia Mary(nee cawley)
Gracie, of Bristol, married April to June Quarter 1935 in Holborn
Registration District, London. Awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross (D.F.C.) and mentuioned in Despatches (MiD) [Supplement to
The London Gazette, Friday, 2 June 1944, page 2615]. In the 1939
Register he was married, a HJ707, resident Galleon Cottage, Blagdon,
Axbridge R.D., Somerset. Buried in HANOVER WAR CEMETERY, Niedersachsen,

| VIGOR | Edmund Arthur | Pilot Officer (Pilot) J/85758, 434 (Bluenose) Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. Flying in a Handley Page Halifax V, serial number LL2588, he took off from R.A.F. Croft on night operations to Montzen to attack railway installations, and was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed on the Dutch-Belgian border, possibly near Aubel, Belgium, at 1.30 hrs, 28 April 1944. Born 9 June 1917. Son of Mr. J. A. Vigor, of Yew Tree Cottage, High Street, Blagdon near Britsol, Somerset. Buried in HEVERLEE WAR CEMETERY, Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium. Plot 6. Row A. Grave 8. Canadian Archives Accession Reference: RG 24, Volume 28867 Note from Internation Bomber Command Centre - Losses database Edmund was born in St.Pancras, London, England on 9 June 1917. His parents both lived at Blagdon, Somerset, England. His enlistment application showed his permanent address as Blagdon and present address as St. Catherine’s, Ontario. He had a brother F/Lt. J. A. Vigor living in London, also a female married cousin in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. He gave his nationality as Canadian in his enlistment papers. The only schools mentioned are the Queen’s School in Cambridge, England and a Technical College in Coventry, England where he took evening classes (no dates). Edmund worked at Noakes Securities Ltd. (Aero Engines) in Coventry where he inspected components before assembly. His sport interests were soccer, swimming, tennis and boxing. He enlisted at Niagara Falls on November 1939 and was next shown as embarking at 3PRC on 5 February 1943. He was at 20 (P)AFU, 4 May 1943, 24 OTU 10 August 1943 and 434 Squadron on 8 January 1944. Edmund was sadly to lose his life on 28 April 1944. |

Wills for Coldstreams Sir George Peter Vernon Wills, twenty-year-old cadet member of the millionaire family associated with the tobacco firm, is to be a second-lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards, states a supplement to last night's "London Gazette." Extract from Aberdeen Press and Journal - Saturday 21 March 1942, page 2: Millionaire Baronet Killed Action Sir George Peter Vernon Wills, member of the millionaire tobacco family, has, it is announced to-day, been killed in action in the Mediterranean area, while serving as a Lieut, in the Coldstream Guards. Sir George, who was 23, was the third baronet. His grandfather, Sir George A. Wills, left £10,000,000, and his father, whom he succeeded in 1931, left over £2,000,000. The heir is his 16-years-old brother, John Vernon Wills. |
