ST MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, LITLINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

The Litlington memorial is to be found inside the church of St Michael the Archangel, Litlington, Sussex. It takes the form of a rectangular wooden board set upon a wooden shelf with a wooden candleholder each end of the shelf while the bottom of the board is decorated with carved wooden roses; above there is a grooved wooden top with a painted gold cross below, centre with the lettering below in black. There are four names listed, two from World War 1 and two from World War 2.

Gunner 2681, "Z" 29th T.M. Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Died 1st May 1916 in France & Flanders. Age 23. Born at Dringhouses, York. Enlisted Lewes, Sussex. Son of George Henry and Harriett Constable, of Clapham Lane, Litlington, Berwick, Sussex. Buried in VILLERS-BOCAGE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Grave E. 4.

TICEHURST

Alfred

Private G/1439, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action 9th May 1915 in France & Flanders. Age 19. Born and enlisted Eastbourne. Son of Richard and Mary Ticehurst, of Church Farm, Titlington (sic - probbaly Litlington), Polegate, Sussex. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 20 and 21.

Shoeing Smith 47712, 14th (King's) Hussars. Died 4th December 1918. Age 31. Husband of J. Stobbart, of Church Farm, Litlington. Buried South West of Church in LITLINGTON CHURCHYARD, Litlington, Sussex.

WALDEN

William Douglas

Flying Officer (Air Gunner) 128386, 31 (S.A.A.F.) Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Country of service United Kingdom. Killed in action flying out of Celone, Italy, in a Consolidated Liberator BVI, serial number KG839, when his aircraft was shot down down by a night flighter during a raid on an oil refinery at Giurgiu south of Bucharest, Romania, 29 June 1944. Aged 27. Native of Lower Willingdon, Sussex. Son of E. H. and Elizabeth Walden, of Lower Willingdon, Sussex. No known grave. Commemorated on MALTA MEMORIAL, Malta. Panel 13, Column 2. BUCKNALL

Richard Drummond-Hay

Captain IA/1342, 2nd Battalion, 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles). Died in the Battle for Singapore 10th February 1942. Age 45. Son of William St. Vincent Bucknall and of Louisa Caroline Bucknall (nee Drummond Hay); husband of Audrey Bucknall (nee Bucknall), of Litlington, Sussex. King's Cadet, Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, 1915. No known grave. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 321.
