Symington, even today it is a very small village and lies about 3 miles from Prestwick Airport. The Memorial stands opposite the village pub called the Wheatsheaf which is highly recommended for a meal. The pieces of wire are believed to be for hanging wreaths around the monument. The names here have been sorted into order for ease of reading.

Baird and Millicent Bessie Baird, of Kelloe, Edrom, Berwickshire, and Forse, Caithness. Buried in SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No.2, Somme, France. Plot I. Row K. Grave 21.

Private S/17902, 2nd Battalion, Princess Louises's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders). Killed in action 21st June 1918 in France & Flanders. Born and enlisted Ayr. Buried in NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot XIV. Row D. Grave 19.

CURTIS Lewis Herbert

[Spelt Louis on SDGW & CWGC] Acting Corporal M2/193904, 648th Motor Transport Company, Royal Army Service Corps. Died 7th May 1918 in East Africa. Aged 41. Born Camberwell, enlisted Ayr, resident Symington. Son of Henry Free Curtis and Lydia Maria Curtis; husband of F. L. C. Curtis, of Symington, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Born at Peckham, London. Buried in DAR ES SALAAM (UPANGA ROAD) CEMETERY, Tanzania. Plot VIII. Row D. Grave 6.

Private 49913, 3rd Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). Died in United Kingdom 10th March 1919. Aged 20. Born Tarbolton, Ayrshire, enlisted Ayr, resident Symington. Son of Robert and Jeanie Dempster, of Symington, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Buried in AYR CEMETERY, Ayr. Plot J. Grave 3539.

DEVINE, MC John [Ross]

Lieutenant, 15th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). Killed in action 26th August 1917. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 6 D and 7 D.

DEWAR William A.

Private, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. - probably William Alexander DEWAR, Private S/19081, "C" Company, 1st/7th Battalion, Princess Louises's (Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders). Killed in action 5th August 1917 in France & Flanders. Aged 33. Born Islay according to SDGW born Shedfield, Hampshire according to CWGC, enlisted Stirling, resident Dunlossit. Son of Alexander and Ellen Dewar; husband of Kate Dewar (nee Walker). Buried in NEW IRISH FARM CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Bekgium. Plot XVII. Row E. Grave 11.

GIBSON John Rodger

[Memorial states Private] Guardsman 9239, Scots Guards. Died of wounds 13th March 1915 in France & Flanders. Aged 18. Born Dundonald, enlisted Glasgow, resident Symington. Son of Campbell Gibson, of High Coodham, Kilmarnock. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot III. Row C. Grave 89.

LAMONT Matthew

[Matt on memorial] Gunner 227756, "C" Battery, 79th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 30th May 1918 in France & Flanders. Aged 19. Born Edinburgh, enlisted Ayr. Son of John and Isabella Lamont, of Low Wardnook, Monkton, Ayrshire. Native of Craigie, Ayrshire. Buried in ENGLEBELMER COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot F. Grave 11.

LEES Thomas

Private 13244, 1/4th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Died 1st October 1918 in France & Flanders. Born and resident Kilmarnock, enlisted Irvine.

McCRAKEN William

Private 435179, 31st Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). Died 7th June 1916. Aged 36. Born Symington, 28th November 1879. Son of William McCraken Snr. Employed as a Teamster. Enlisted and passed fit 23rd May 1915 at Calgary, aged 36. Height 5 feet 10 inches, girth 36 inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair dark. Religion Presbyterian. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 24 - 28 - 30.

McGUFFIE Robert

Private 260222, 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, the Duke of Albany's). Killed in action 21st November 1917 in France & Flanders. Aged 38. Born Tynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire, enlisted Ayr, Ayrshire. Son of the late Anthony and Mary McGuffie; husband of Elizabeth Rennie McGuffie, of Symington Village, Kilmarnock. Formerly 7028, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. No known grave. Commemorated on CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. Panel 10.

McEWAN John

[Listed as Trooper on memorial] Private 1836, Ayrshire 9Earl of Carrick's Own)(Hussars) Yeomanry. Died of wounds 26th December 1915 at Gallipoli. Born and enlisted Ayr, resident Irvine. Buried in PINK FARM CEMETERY, HELLES, Turkey. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 16.

STEWART, DSO William Norman

[Memorials states Colonel, L. & B. HORSE Regiment] Lieutenant-Colonel, North Somerset Yeomanry attached 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 22nd March 1918. Aged 44. Son of the late James and Margaret Sandilands Stirling Stewart. Formerly served with the Lothian and Border Horse. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.). No known grave.
