Private, 5832599, 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died from beri beri on 9th July 1943 aged 29 years, Son of William and Mary Gadsby of Cambridge. He is buried at Chungkai War Cemetery, 4. H.4. Thailand. See also Cambridge Perse School

PTE. C. F. GADSBY

Mr. and Mrs. Gadsby, of Manea Villa, on Montagu Road, Cambridge, have received official notice of the death of their son, Pte. Cyril Frank Gadsby, 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment, in Malaya Camp on July 9th, 1943.

Pte. Gadsby was educated at the Perse School, and before the war was with the firm of Messrs. Arthur Shepherd, Trinity Street.

GALLYON John Newman

Sergeant, 903639, RAFVR. Died on 3td March 1941 aged 25 years. He crashed near Shillingford, Devon, when control was lost during a cross country exercise. Son of Theophilius Percy Gallyon and of Mahala Gallyon (nee Woollard) of Cambridge. He is buried at Chesterton (St Andrew) Churchyard, UK. See also Cambridge Holy Sepulchre

News has been received of the death on active service of Flight-Sergt. John Newman Gallyon, second son of Mrs. M. Gallyon, of 166, Chesterton Wind, and the late Mr. J. P. Gallyon.

Flight-Sergt.Gallyon, who was 25, was a member of the well-known firm of gun makers in Bridge Street. Before the war he was a member of the Civil Air Guard, and he joined the R.A.F. at the outbreak of hostilities. He had seen considerable service over enemy and enemy-occupied territory.

Educated at the County School and the Technical School, Flight-Sergt. Gallyon was at one time a member of the Town Rugby Football Club and of the Town Hockey Club.

He was unmarried.

GATES Douglas Graham

Private, 5933156, 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died on 14th February 1942 aged 20 years. Son of Percy Gates and of Norah Edith Gates, of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Civil Hospital Grave Memorial, Column 4. Singapore.

Died of Wounds. — Our picture is of Pte. Douglas Graham Gates, 1st. Cambs. Regiment, whose mother, Mrs. Edith Boyce, of 25, Romsey Terrace, Mill Road, Cambridge, has been officially informed that he died of wounds at Singapore on February 14th, 1942. This is the first news of him received since the capitulation. Aged 20, Pte. Oates was formerly employed by Dales Brewery.

NEWS has been received in Cambridge of the death on active service of Sergt. Pilot H. F. Gigney, son of Mrs. Gigney, of 17, Bentinek Street, Cambridge, and the late Mr. Horace Gigney.

Sergt. Pilot Gigney, who had had his wings for almost a year, was aged 22 years. He was a Central School boy and a keen Rover. On leaving school he joined the Cambridge University Press, and later became a member of the R.A.F.V.R. He was called to active service in the R.A.F. at the outbreak of war.

Whilst in civilian life, Sergt.-Pilot Gigney was a particularly enthusiastic swimmer, being a member of three clubs—the Granta, Cambridge Amateurs, and Pitt Press.

Died at Fulwood Hospital, Sheffield, of injuries sustained when struck by the propeller of an Oxford, probably at Laconfield. Son of Ernest Nelson Ginn and Emily May Ginn of Cambridge. Accidentally Drowned. — Information has been received from Major Seekings of the death of Pte. Harold James Glasscock, who had been a prisoner of war in Japan and was accidentally drowned whilst working on Saigon Docks, Indo-China, at the end of February, 1945. Pte. Glasscock was the second son of Mrs. G. M. Glasscock, of 16, King's Road, Newnham, and prior to being called up was employed by the Home and Colonial Stores.

Young Airman's Death
in Hospital

The death occurred in a hospital on Friday, after an operation, of L.A.C. Paul Eric Godfrey, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Godfrey, of 14, Halifax Road, Cambridge, at the early age of 19 years.

Paul was a most estimable fellow and had a host of friends, by whom the news of his passing has been received with profound sorrow. He received his education at the Cambridge County School, was a member of his school Rugby football XV., and had had a number of games with the Shelford Rugby Football Club. He joined the R.A.F. in February, 1939, and lived his whole life for the Service.

Fond of friends, games and laughter, he enjoyed every minute of living, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

GOODLIFFE Sydney Arthur
Staff Serjeant, 2078671, 251 Field Company, RE. Died from heart failure on 28th May 1945 aged 38 years. Son of Sidney John and A. Augusta R. Goodliffe; husband of Joyce Mary Goodlifee, of Cambridge. N.D.H. King's Scout. He is buried at Kranji War Cemetery, 14. B. 9. Singapore.
GOODWIN Stanley Harold

Serjeant, 2079363, RE. Died on 7th September 1945 aged 24 years. Son of Laurie and Elsie Goodwin; husband of Hilary Mary Goodwin of Trumpington, Cambridgeshire. No known grave. Missing on Air Operations.—Our picture is of Sergt. Stanley H. Goodwin, Royal Engineers, aged 24, husband of Mrs. Hilary Goodwin, of Portersfield Road, Norwich, and only son of Mrs. E. Goodwin, 30, Alpha Terrace, Trumpington. Sergt, Goodwin was reported missing on September 7th, 1945, while travelling in an aircraft on a special operation in South-East Asia Command. He was embodied at the outbreak of war with the Territorial Army, and served in the 287th Field Company, R.E. He left the Company just before they went to Singapore, and went to India for special work in Calcutta in August, 1944. Before the war he was draughtsman for the South Cambs. R.D.C.

Sergeant, 1160229, 138 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on 28th December 1941 aged 19 years. Crashed whilst trying to land at Stradishall in bad weather when returning from a special operations sortie, 1 crew member survived. Son of Thomas Wardle Gordon and Gladys Maud Gordon of Cambridge. Shot down by a night fighter near Wortelsetten, South of Donauworth, during a bomber support sortie in the Augsburg area. 3 crew members survived. Son of Frank Balmforth Gray and Annie Gray of Christchurch, Cambridgeshire. He is buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, 5. K. 9. Germany.

NEWS has been received in Cambridge that Sergt. Edward Ralph Hall, 21, of the R.A.F., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hall, of 61, Burleigh Street, is missing as a result of night operations.

Sergt. Hall was educated at the Perse School, where, at the age of 15, he broke the records for the high jump and the quarter-mile. He was apprenticed in London and later returned to Cambridge, where he was in business with his father. He joined the R.A.F.V.R. and was called up on the outbreak of war, serving as a wireless operator and air gunner.

“We were expecting him home on leave this week,” Mrs. Hall said to day, “and when the telegram came we thought it was to say when he was coming.”

Besides being an active member of the Shelford Athletic Club, Hall was a popular member of the Fitzroy Social Club.

Private Ron Hammond

News has just reached Mrs. R. Hammond of 10, Ainsworth Street, Cambridge, that her husband Pte. Ron Hammond, 2nd Cambridgeshire Regimenty, has died as a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. He was in Thai Camp. This is the first news Mrs. Hammond has received of her husband since the fall of Singapore. Thirty - two years of age, Pte. Hammond attended St. Luke’s School, and was afterwards employed as a painter and decorator, being with Mr. F. H. Start, of Sturton Street before he joined up three years and four months ago.

Died in Thailand Camp. — News has been received by Mrs. E. L. Hardy, of 104, Cromwell Road, Cambridge, that her husband, Pte. W. H. Hardy, 1st Cambs. Regiment, died whilst a prisoner of war in Thailand Camp on April 23rd, 1943. Before joining the Territorials Pte. Hardy was employed as night porter at the Universits Arms Hotel.

PILOT OFFICER FREDERICK HARROLD, 23, only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Harrold, of 38, Hills Road, Cambridge, is reported killed in action during the air fighting on Saturday.

Educated at the County School he was employed at the University library until a year before war broke out, when he joined the R.A.F. on a short service commission.

He was a well-known member of the Cambridge Town Rowing Club.

Haskins, 103, Stretten Avenue, Cambridge, is reported missing after the fall of Singapore. Corporal Haskins was educated at the Central School.

Prisoner's Death at Sea.— Mr. and Mrs. Hayward, of 214, Histon Road, Cambridge, have received news that their son, Pte. W.O. Hayward, previously reported missing at sea, is now presumed to have died on 12th September, 1944, when the Japanese transport ship in which he was travelling as a prisoner of war was sunk. Pte. Hayward was educated at the Roman Catholic School, Union Road, and before the war he was employed at Downing College.

Died in Thailand.—Our picture is of Pte. S. Hibbitt, Army Catering Corps, whose wile, Mrs. Hibbitt, of 218, Milton Road, Cambridge, has been officially informed that he died on the 4th. July, 1943, of malaria, while a prisoner of war in Thailand. A Territorial before being called up for war service, Pte. Hibbitt was attached to the 1st Cambs. Regiment, and had been a prisoner since the fall of Singapore.

Prisoner of War Drowned. — Official news has been received by Mrs. E. M. High, of 11, Green's Road. Cambridge, that her husband, Pte, A. J. High, 1st Cambs. Regiment, previously reported missing at sea is now known to have been drowned when the ship in which he was travelling as prisoner of war was sunk on September 12th, 1944. Pte High was the son of Mrs. E. High, of Yarmouth and before the war he was employed by the Eastern Counties Bus Company.

Died of Wounds.—Our picture is of Gunner A. Hines, R.A., whose wife, Mrs. Hines, of 24, Fallowfields, has been officially informed that he died of wounds on October 16th, in North-West Europe. Gunner Hines was a bricklayer before the war, working for many well-known building firms in Cambridge. He leaves a wife and five-years-old son, and will be sadly missed by many friends
HISLOP Joseph Kerr
Lieutenant, 253625, 62 Anti-Tank Regiment, RA. Died on 9th July 1944 aged 31 years. Son of Albert James Hislop and Amy Hislop; husband of Mollie Marion Hislop of Cambridge. He is buried at Bayeux War Cemetery, II. B. 25. France.
HOARE James
Able Seaman, C/JX 145018, H.M.S. Nigeria, Royal Navy. Died on 12th August 1944 aged 22 years. He died after an Italian subamrine Axum torpedoed the HMS Nigeria, 51 other crew mates died in the attack. Son of John and Mary Elizabeth Hoare of Cambridge. No known grave. Killed in Action.—Mrs. Hobson, of 48, Searle Street, Cambridge, has just received the sad news that her husband, Gunner William John (Jack) Hobson, of the Royal Artillery, was killed in action on April 20th while serving in Western Europe. During his service in the Royal Artillery he took part in the Defence of Britain, and several months ago was drafted overseas. He was in his 35th, year, and in addition to his widow, leaves one little boy age seven years. Before joining the Forces he was employed at the Cambridge University Press. He was son-in-law of Mr. and the late Mrs. Webb, of 200, Histon Road, Cambridge. A brother of, Gunner Hobson was killed just before the end of the last war, his home then being 13Great Eastern Street, Cambridge.
HOCKEY Frank Spencer
Captain, 79055, 1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died on 14th February 1942 aged 28 years. Son of Herbert Thomas Hockey and Mabel Francis Hockey of Cambridge; husband of Margaret Elizabeth Hockey of Oxford. M.A. (Cantab.). No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Memorial, Column 55. Singapore.
HOGG James Joseph Rutherford
Lance Corporal, 5829065, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Died on 6th May 1943 aged 21 years. Son of Robert Rutherford Hogg and Charlotte Mary Hogg of Cambridge; husband of Peggy Ellen Rutherford Hogg of Cambridge. He is buried at Massicault War Cemetery, I. J. 6. Tunisia.
HORNSBY Francis William
Lance Corporal, 2079370, 1 Parachute Squadron, RE. Died on 24th November 1942 aged 21 years. Son of E. and Annie Hornsby; husband of Joyce Ethel Hornsby of Derby. No known grave. He is commemorated at Medjez-El-Bab Memorial, Face 10. Tunisia.
HORNSBY Leslie Charles
Corporal, 5949698, 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Died from beri beri and enteritis on 29th September 1943 aged 38 years. He is buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, 2. E. 57. Thailand.
HOSKYNS Sir Chandos Wren

Flying Office, 152074, 190 Squadron, RAFVR.Died on 3rd April 1945 aged 21 years. Lost without trace during an SOE Special Operation supply drop to "Stirrup 16" Dz in Norway. 14th Baronet. Son of the Revd. Canon Sir Edwyn Clement Hoskyns, Baronet and Lady Hoskyns of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Runnymede Memorial, Panel 267. UK. See also Cambridge St Mark's

Baronet Airman Now Presumed Dead. —Previously reported missing, Flying Officer Sir Chandos Wren Hoskyns, R.A.F.V.R., is now officially presumed to have lost his life in air operations over Norway on April 3rd last. Aged 21, he was the eldest son of the late Rev. Sir E. C. Hoskyns and of Lady Hoskyns, of Millington. Road, Cambridge. He succeeded to the title when he was 13 on his father's death in 1937. Sir Chandos was educated at King's College Choir School and Winchester. He joined the R.A.F.V.R. in March, 1942, and his duties included dropping supplies to the “under ground movement” in Norway and towing gliders. There will be a memorial service in St. Mary's-the Less Church, Cambridge, on Wednesday, December 19th, at 3 p.m., when all friends will be welcome.

Died in Thailand.—News has been received in Cambridge that Pte. Leslie Howard, 2nd Batt. Cambs. Regt, died on Sept. 9th, 1943, of avitaminosis, while a prisoner of war in .No. 2 Camp, Thailand. He was the second son of Mrs. Howard and the late Mr. J. Howard, of 149, Ross Street, Cambridge. Before joining the Forces he was employed by Mr. H. D. K. Curtis, of 19 Hills Road, Cambridge. Lance Commander (E), H.M.M.G.B. 2002, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. Died on 12th May 1945, aged 32 years. Vessel was sunk by a mine en route from Aberdeen to Gothenburg, Sweden. Son of Herbert C. and Mabel. A. Coppins-Hughes of Clacton-On-Sea. No known grave. He is commemorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial, Panel 95. Column 3. UK.

Former Cambridge Man Killed.—Our picture is of Lieut.-Commander (E) Leslie Herbert Coppins, R.N.V.R., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes Coppins, of Clacton (and formerly of “The Hermitage,” Silver Street, Cambridge), who has died on active. He was on a test trip and it is believed that his boat struck a mine, and there were only two a survivors. Lieut.-Cmdr. Coppins attended the Central School and was also a chorister at Pembroke College. His principal sports were swimming and motoring and he and his father were both members of the Cambridge Swimming Club and the Cambridge and County Motor Club. Prior to the war he was with Davey Paxman and Co., of Colchester, and was on the Diesel Development Staff. At the outbreak of war he was in Turkey for about ten months for his firm, and came home through Italy a few days before war was declared with that country. The date of death is presumed to be May 12th, 1945, through the boat, a M.G.B., striking a mine off Norway.

HURST George Wilson
Sergeant, 548080, B.S.R.U., RAFVR. Died on 7th November 1944 aged 26 years. He was onboard LST-420 which was a navel tank landing ship that hit a mine off Ostend and sunk. No known grave. He is commemorated at Runnymede Memorial, Panel 232. UK.
HURST Lawrence Goddard
Flying Officer, 148030, 110 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on 6th April 1945 aged 29 years. Lost without trace during an attack on the Pegu-Martaban area near Rangoon, Burma. Son of John Ernest William and Jessie Hurst of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Memorial, Column 447. Singapore. See also Cambridge St Mark's
ILETT Eric Edward
Warrant Officer, 742870, RAFVR. Died on 27th February 1942 aged 26 years. Crashed into the North Sea during a patrol off the Duch Coast. Son of Edward Debnam Ilett and Katie Susannah Ilett; husband of Kathleen Hazel Ilett of Cherry Hinton, Cambridgeshire. No known grave. He is commemorated at Runnymede Memorial, Panel 72. Singapore.
IMBER Dennis Sydney

Sergeant, 748039, 49 , RAFVR. Died on 16th October 1940 aged 21 years. Shot down by flak near Ambares-Et-Lagrave, 7 miles northeast of Bordeaux during a mine laying sortie to the Gironde estuary. Son of Sidney Albert John and Grace Elizabeth Imber of Cambridge. He is buried at Ambares-El-Lagrave Communal Cemetery, SP. Mem. "C". France.

KILLED IN ACTION
Cambridge Man's Death

Official news has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Imber, of 43, Cavendish Road. Cambridge. That their only son, Sergt. Dennis Sidney Imber, R.A.F., has been killed in action.

Aged 21, Sergt. Imber was, before the war,a member of the staff of the Cambridge Co-operative Society, and joined the R.A.F.V.R. in April, 1939. He was well known as a member of the Beehives, having rowed and played cricket and football for them.

ISON George Ison
Driver, T/70386, Royal Army Service Corps. Died on 1st June 1940 aged 29 years. Son of George and Harriet Ann Ison; husband of Gladys May Ison of Cambridge. He is buried at La Bassee Communal Cemetery, grave 8. France.
