Sergeant, 1873691, 158 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on 25th May 1944 aged 22 years. Crashed into the Oosterschelde off Wissenkerke during a raid on Aachen, Germany. He is buried at Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, 14. B. 2. UK

Now Back in England

News has been received by Mr. and Mrs. A. Walker, of 10, Covent Garden, Cambridge, that their third son, Sergeant-Air Gunner H. J. Walker, previously reported missing on May 25th, 1944, is now officially reported killed on that date.

Sergt. Walker had completed 20 bombing raids, including three on Berlin. Before joining up he was employed by the Air Ministry, Station Road. He was educated at the Central School.

Mr. and Mrs. Walker have also received news that their second son, Bandsman R, G. Walker, Suffolk Regiment, previously reported missing, has arrived at an English port after being liberated from a German prisoner of war camp, where he had been interned for five years. He has just completed 14 years' service.

WALKER James Charles William

Sapper, 2070822, 287 Field Company, RE. Died on 5th February 1942 aged 21 years. Son of James and Edith May Walker of Cambridge. He is buried at Kranji War Cemetery, 16. A. 11. Singapore.

Died of Wounds.—Our picture is of Sapper J. C. Walker,- R.E., son of Mr and Mrs. J. Walker, of 112, Kendal Way, Cambridge, who, they have been informed, died of wounds at Singapore shortly after February 5th, 1942. He was a Central School boy, and was later employed by the Cambridge G.P.O.
WALLIS Ronald Arthur

Gunner, 332 Battery, 100 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. RA. Died on 26th December 1942 aged 26 years. Son of Gertrude Wallis of Cambridge. He is buried at Mosul War Cemetery, 2. A. 3. Iraq.

News has just been received by Mrs. G, Wallis, of 18, Romsey Terrace, Cambridge, that her son, Ronald Arthur Wallis, R.A., has died on active service. He was 26 years of age, and was a member of St. Matthew's Church choir, and was well-known as a Scoutmaster and Sunday School teacher at the church. He was educated at St. George's School, and before joining the Forces was employed as a porter at Messrs. Marks and Spencer. His father, the late Mr. A. A. Wallis was killed in the last war.

WALLMAN Ronald Thomas
Lance Corporal, 2069162, 287 Field Company, RE. Died of cholera on 10th June 1943 aged 22 years. Son of Thomas and Florence Wallman. He is buried at Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, B6. F. 7. Myanmar.
WALTON Stanley

Flight Lieutenant, 125847, 36 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on 24th January 1945 aged 29 years. He was lost without trace during an asw patrol. Believed to have crashed into the Sea off Anglessey. No known grave. He is commemorated at Runneymede Memorial, Panel 266. UK.

Reported Missing.—News has been received by Mrs. Walton, of 19, Brook-fields, Mill Road, Cambridge, that her husband, Flight-Lieut. Stanley Walton (Jim), R.A.F.V.R., is reported missing after operations on January 24th, Flight-Lieut. Walton was educated at the Cambridge .and County High School for Boys. Before going into the R.A.F. he was employed at the Cambridge Permanent Building Society. He-is the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Walton, of 159 Perne Road, Cambridge.

EAST

An ex-employee of Messrs. Herbert Robinson, Cambridge, has been killed, according to the official citation, “as a result of enemy action in the. Middle East.” He is Sergeant James Ward, R.A.F. and his wife, Mrs. M. Ward, of 5, Trafalgar Road, Cambridge, received this news by telegram a short while ago. Sergeant Ward was 24 years of Sergt. Ward; age, and his father was killed in the Great War. His mother resides at Cottenham.

R.A.F. Attend Funeral
in Scotland

The funeral took place in Scotland recenetly of Aircraftman Geoffrey A. Watts, R.A.F.V.R., ony son of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Watts, of 10, Victoria Park, Cambridgewho died as the result of an accident.

He was 32 years old and was married only three months ago to Miss Jessie Herd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James herd,Cairndhu, Pindochy, Banff.

Before leaving Cambridge several years ago, deceased was educated at Milton Road Council School and later at the Cambridge and County High School for Boys. On leaving school he served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Eaden Lilley and Co. He was a choir boy at St. Luke's, where he was later and enthusiastic Sunday School teacher and server at Eucharist. He was devoted to music, and eventually became organist at Fulbourn church.

The funeral took place from Cairndhu to Hillhead Cemetery and was attended by a detachment of the Home Guard and memebers of the R.A.F., the latter carrying the coffin to the grave.

WEAVER Frederick Bernard

Private, 5828766, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died on 26th January 1942 aged 24 years. No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Memorial, Column 61. UK.

Presumed Killed in Malaya.—Mrs. T. Weaver, of 42, Brook's Road, Cambridge, has received official news that her son, Pte. F. B Weaver, Cambs. Regiment, previously reported missing on April 13th, 1942, is now, for official purposes, presumed to have been killed on January 26th, 1942, during the fighting at Malaya. Pte. Weaver, who was educated at St George's. School, was a keen sportsman and was well known as a schoolboy footballer. Before Joining up he was employed at the Atlas Stone Co., Coldham's Lane.

WEBB Cyril Henry Walter

Private, 5831250, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died on 12th September 1944 aged 28 years. Was onboard Kachidoki Maru sunk by the Americans off the cost of Hainan Island off China. Husband of Muriel Irene Webb, No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Memorial, Column 61. UK.

Presumed Died at Sea. —Mrs. M. I. Webb, of 351, Ditton Fields, has received official news that her husband, Pte. C. H. W. Webb, previously reported missing at sea after the sinking of a Japanese transport, is now presumed to have died on September 12tht 1944. Before the war, Pte. Webb was employed by Sawston Paper Mills.
WEST Harry George Edward

Private, 5th Battalion, Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment). Died between 29th May 1940 and 4th June 1940. Son of H.G. and Martha West of Old Chesterton, Cambridgeshire. He is buried at Dozingham Military Cemetery, XVI. A. 28. Belgium.

of Cambridge

Mrs. H. West, of 1, Chapel Street, Old Chesterton, has received news that her son, Pte. Harry George Edward West who was previously reported missing, is now reported dead, killed while in action with the B.E.F.

Pte. West was 23 years of age, and was the son of the late Mr. Harry West, of Chapel Street.

He was called up at the outbreak of war in the Militia, and served in the 5th Green Howards.

Educated at St. Andrew's School, Old Chesterton, and afterwards employed in the bakery trade, Pte. West had many friends.

WEST Kenneth Frederick

Sergeant, 1600034, 576 Squadron, RAFVR, Died between 4th July 1944 and 5th July 1944 aged 21 years. Son of Frederick and Marjorie Alice West of Cambridge. He is bured at Cambridge City Cemetery, Grave 14705. UK. See also Cambridge St Mark’s

Sergeant Kenneth
West

Fellow members of the bomber crew will act as bearers at the funeral in Cambridge on Monday of Sergt. Kenneth Frederick West. R.A.F., who was killed on active service.

Sergt. West, who was 21 years of age, was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. West, of 76, Grantchester Meadows. He was educated at the County Boys' School and as a boy was a chorister in Trinity College Choir. He was a keen sportsman and played a good deal of cricket. On leaving school he was employed on the staff of the Chesterton Rural District Council. He belonged to the Home Guard in its early days and also became a member of the Air Training Corps. Joining up in November, 1941, he went out to Canada for training and returned to England last September. He had taken part in several night operations.

The funeral service on Monday afternoon will be in St. Mark's Church and the interment will take place at the Borough Cemetery.

WHEELER Kenneth George

Leading Aicraftsman, 621799, 9 Squadron, Royal Air Force, Bomber Command. Accidently killed whilst on flare duty when a Vickers Wellington aircraft, from 149 Squadron, crash landed at Honington, Suffolk, and hit the Chance Light crew 7th October 1940 aged 23 years. Native of Cambridge. Son of George and Ethel Mary Wheeler of Cambridge. In the 1921 census he was the son of George and Ethel Mary Wheeler, aged 3, born Cambridgeshire, resident 13, Albion Row, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. He is buried at Cambridge City Cemetery, Grave 9433. UK.

L.A. C. Kenneth
Wheeler

IN GIVING his own life, L.A.C. Kenneth George Wheeler (killed in action recently) was instrumental in saving the lives of six others.

L.A.C. Wheeler, who was 23, was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Wheeler, 13, Albion Row, Cambridge. He was educated at St. John's College School, and, on leaving, worked for five years as a mechanic with Messrs. King and Harper, Ltd. He left to join the R.A.F. in 1938, and had just completed his training when war broke out. A keen footballer, he often played in R.A.F. games.

The funeral will take place at the Borough Cemetery on Saturday, following a service in St. Giles' Church at 2 p.m. L.A.C.

Private, 14205776, 9th Battalion, Border Regiment. Died on 14th May 1944 aged 21 years. Son of Henry William and Dorothy Elizabeth White of Cambridge. He is buried at Imphal War Cemetery, 2. C. 2. India.
WHITEHEAD Roy Charles

Gunner, 14412750, 97 Anti-Tank Regiment, RA. Died on 1st November 1944 aged 19 years. Son of Walter Horace and May Whitehead of Cambridge. He is buried at Nederweert War Cemetery, I. D. 7. Netherlands.

Died of Wounds.—Mr. and Mrs. W. Whitehead, of 93, New Street Cambridge, have been notified that their second son, Gunner Roy Charles Whitehead, died of wounds received in the fighting in Holland on November 2nd. Gunner Whitehead, who was 19 years of age, was educated at St. George's and prior to joining the Forces was employed at Marshall's Flying School. Their eldest son, Gunner Lorraine Walter Whitehead, who was serving in the same company is suffering from severe head wounds.
WHITLEY Samuel Wilfred

Died in Japan.—Official News has been received by Mrs. E. Whitley, of 40. Mowbray Road, Cambridge, that her son, Pte. Samuel W. Whitley, of the 1st Battalion, Cambs. Regiment, died of beri-beri and heart paralysis on August 11th. 1945, while a prisoner of war in Nagoya prisoner of war camp, Japan. Pte. Whitley, who was formerly employed at Trinity Hall, was engaged to V.A.D. Ruby Brooks, who, it will be remembered, recently lost her life in a car accident whilst travelling between Jahore and Singapore.

Gunner, 1808717, 240 Battery., 77 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, RA. Died from colitis on 26th September 1943 aged 29 years, He is buried at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, 2. E. 38. Thailand.

Died in Thailand.—Mr. and Mrs, T. Whittet, of "Ranelagh," Cambridge Road, Milton (late oF 125, Milton Road, Cambridge), have received news from the War Office that. their son, Gunner J. Wilmer Whittet, 77th H,A.A., R.A., died im Kamhuri Hospital, Thailand, on September 26th, 1943. Before being called up he in business with his father as a butcher at 125, Milton Road.

WILLCOCKS Edward Jack

Killed in Action.—Mr. R. Willcocks, of 17, Clare Street, Cambridge, has received notification that his son, Pte. Edward Jack Willcocks, previously reported missing in the Central Mediterranean on Sept. 6th, was killed in action on that date. Pte. Willcocks was educated at St. Luke's, and was an old choirboy of Jesus College. On leaving school he went to work with his grandfather’s firm of plumbers, Messrs. T. Simons and Sons, Histon Road.

He was on board the Hofaku Maru that was sunk by the Americans 80 miles off the Phillippines coast. Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Williams of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Singapore Memorial, Column 62. Singapore.

Missing at Sea. — Our picture is of Pte. J. S. Williams, of the 2nd Batt., Cambridgeshire Regiment, who has been reported missing after the sinking of a Japanese transport in the autumn of 1944, which was carrying him from Thailand to Japan. Pte. Williams, who was the second son of Mrs. E. Williams, of 236, Ross Street, Cambridge, was educated at St. Luke's School, and before enlistment was employed by the Public Benefit Meat Company, Castle Street, Cambridge. Mrs. Williams' eldest son has also been missing since the fall of Singapore.

Another Far East Death. — Official news has been received by Mrs. E. E. Williams, of 236, Ross Street, that her eldest son, L.-Cpl. R. H. Williams, of the 1st Batt. Cambs. Regiment, was killed in action in the Far East on 13th February, 1942. L.-Cpl. Williams, who was 35 years of age, was educated at St. Luke's School, and before the war was employed at Messrs. Ridgeon's, in Gloucester Street.

Private, 5833888, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died 13th April 1944 aged 30 years. He is buried at Chungkai War Cemetery, 1. B. 10. Thailand.

Death of Prisoner of War.—Official news has been received that Pte. W. R. (Reg) Willis, 2nd Batt., Cambs. Regiment, husband of Mrs. W. R. Willis, of Brampton Road; Cambridge, and youngest son of Mrs. E. Willis, of 21 Rivar Place, Sleaford Street, Cambridge, died whilst a prisoner of war in Thailand on April 13th, 1944. Before being called up, he was employed at Dale's brewery.

Captain, 90556, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died from diptheria and pneumonia on 21st January 1943 aged 33 years. Son of Edward Lewis Wilson and Dorothy Wilson; husband of Helen Wilson of Streatham, London. He is buried at Chungkai War Cemetery, 12. G. 4. Thailand.
WILSON Reginald Albert

Killed in Action. — News has been received by Mrs. R. A. Wilson, of Byfleet, Surrey, that her husband, Cpl. Reginald Albert Wilson, of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, was killed in action in Normandy on August 6th, He is a son of Mrs. a. Wilson, of 82, Darwin Drive, Histon Road, Cambridge. Cpl. Wilson served 10 years with the colours, five of them in India, during which he fought in the North West Frontier campaign. Before joining up Cpl. Wilson was employed by Messrs. Ridgeon and Son, of Tenison Road.

Marine, CH/X 110612, No.45 R.M. Commando, Royal Marines. Died on 20th January 1946 aged 21 years, Son of James Arthur and Laura Wilson of Cambridge. He is buried at Cambridge City Cemetery, Grave 8453. UK.

Died in Japanese Hands.—Official news has been received by Mr. Windmill, of 96, High Street, Girton, that his youngest son, Driver Ronald Windmill, 287th Field Company, R.E., died whilst a prisoner of war in, Japanese hands, on November 3rd, 1943. The cause of his death is unknown. Before the war Driver Windmill was employed by Shell Mex.

Civilian. Died on 24th February 1941 aged 29 years. She was killed in a German bombing raid on Hills Road, Cambridge. Presumed Dead.—Our picture is of Sapper C. W. G. Woods, R.E., whose wife, Mrs. L. Woods, of 7, Ashfield Road, Cambridge, has now received news that he is presumed dead after being reported missing, believed drowned at sea last June. Aged 26, he was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Woods, of 34, Kendal Way, Chesterton, and he served at the evacuation of Dunkirk. Before the war he was employed by Messrs. W. Eaden Lilley and Co., Ltd.

Prisoner's Presumed Death.—Official news has been received by Mrs. T. Woollard, of 105, Green End Road, Cambridge, stating that her husband, Corpl. Thomas Charles Woollard, 2nd Bn. Cambs. Regiment, previously reported missing at sea after the sinking of a Japanese transport, is now presumed to have died on September 21st, 1944. Corpl. Woollard was 25 years old, and was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Woollard, of the same address. Before joining up he was employed by L.N.E.R. at Cambridge.
WORLAND Ann

Civilian. Died on 12th February 1941 aged 71 years. She died with two others when an RAF plane crashed when returning from a bombing raid in Histon Road, Cambridge. All air crew survived. Widow of Arthur J. Worland. Died at 1 Roseneath Villa. She is buried at Cambridge Municipal Borough, UK.

MRS. A. WORLAND.

The Rev. Paul Osborn (vicar) conducted a funeral service at St. Giles’ Church on Saturday for Mrs. Ann Worland, whose sudden death occurred at No. 1 Roseneath Villas, Histon Road, on Wednesday last as the result of an accident to a British Aeroplane.

A representative congregation attended and the hymn “The King of love my Shepherd is” was sung, accompanied by the organist. The interment followed in the family grave at Histon Road Cemetery.

Mrs. Worland was 71 years of age.

Immediate mourners were: Mr. Walter Worland (son), Mrs. F. Marshall, Mrs. J. Stanford, Mrs. Litchfield, Miss Mildred Worland and Mrs. Reynolds (daughters), Mr. Jack Marshall and Miss Eileen Litchfield (grandchildren) Messrs. C. Marshall, T. Stanford, F. Litchfield and J. WOSENCROFT Stanley Reginald

Corporal, 7261290, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died from alcoholic intoxication on 19th February 1942 aged 36 years. Son of Robert Henry and Edith Wosencroft. He is buried at Stanley Military Cemetery, 1. A. 105. China (including Hong Kong). See also Cambridge Perse School

A TELEGRAM has been received from the R.A.M.C. Records Office stating that Corpl. S. R. Wosencroft R.A.M.C., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. Wosencroft, of 9, Petersfield, and brother of Mr. W. H. Wosencroft, 139, Gwydir Street, has died in Hong Kong while a prisoner of war from an illness the nature of which is not yet known. He had seen service in Ireland, Singapore (three years), Shanghai and Hong Kong where he was in the military hospital when the island capitulated on Christmas Day, 1941. When in Cambridge he was known as an entertainer, and was in the “Odds and Ends” Concert Party. During his military career he found considerable scope for his talents, and had been associated with the R.A.M.C. Concert Party. In Hong Kong he edited the “Snake and Staff,” the Ear East magazine of the R.A.M.C.
WRIGHT Kenneth Allan

Sergeant, 1334532, 38 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on 6th January 1944 aged 21 years. Presumed to have collided with another plane 100 miles north of Benghazi during a night ASW patrol for Convoy Parcel. Son of Vic and Elsie Wright of Cambridge. No known grave. He is commemorated at Alamein Memorial, Column 281. Egypt.

Reported Missing

NEWS has been received by Mr. and Mrs. V. Wright, of 33, Kenday Way, Cambridge, that their son, Flight-Sergt. W.O. /A.G. Kenneth Alan Wright, has been missing from air operations in the Western Desert since January 6th. He was educated at Milton and Chesterton Senior School, and joined up as a volunteer in the R.A.F. in 1941. Before joining up he was employed as under-gardener to Dr. Lane Roberts, of Tewin Mill, Tewin, near Welwyn, Herts. He celebrated his 21st birthday on the last day of 1943.
YOUNG Benjamin Frank

Private, 5959743, 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Died on 6th September 1942 aged 33 years, Son of Thomas and Clara Young; husband of Ivy Doris Louisa Young of Cambridge. He is buried at Kranji War Cemetery, 10. C. 1. Singapore.

Extract from Cambridge Daily News in 1945:

Died in Thailand.—Official intimation has been received by Mrs. B. F. Young, of 180, King's Hedges Road, Cambridge, that her husband, Pte. B. F. Young, 5th Beds. and Herts. Regiment, died of diphtheria in Thailand on September 6th, 1942. He was the son of Mr. Thomas Young, of High Street, Cottenham. Before joining up, he was employed by Messrs. Boyton and Wright, builders, Cambridge, and was well-known in Cottenham for his prowess on the football field.
