SALTERS LODE WAR MEMORIAL

The war memorial cross stands within railings on the east side of the road at the south end of the village, at the roadside on the A1122 in Salters Lode, Norfolk. It takes the form of a stone wheel cross bearing a sword in relief in square enclosure surrounded by iron railings. There are 18 names for World War 1 on the front face and 6 names for World War 2 on the plinth.

Sad News of Salters Lode

HIS many friends in the Salters Lode district will hear with regret of the death of Pte. Joseph Henry North, who has been killed in action.

Pte. North, who was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. G. North, of Holly Farm, Salters Lode, was called up on July 15th, 1943, and went overseas on Mar. 28th of this year. He was serving with the Green Howards in the Central Mediterranean, and on Saturday his parents received the sad news that he had been killed in action on May 23rd.

Nineteen years of age, Pte. North was a member of the Downham Market Home Guard until he was called up, and he had a wide circle of friends. Formerly a scholar for some years at the Wesley Methodist Sunday School, Nordelph, he worked for Mr. Haylett before joining the Army.
