TIXALL WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is to be found within St. John the Baptist Church, Tixall Road, Tixall, Stafford, Staffordshire. It takes the form of a plaque on the south wall of the nave. It takes the form of a Marble plaque with black incised lettering, stylised, guilded, roses on bevelled edges, with a black cross in the upper left corner of the cross. There are five names listed for World Wr 1 only. Faculty Granted 23 February 1921 and dedicated 9 July 1921 attended by the Bishop of Lichfield.

ELLEMENT Henry Victor

Private 203224 (CWGC has him down as J H Ellement), 1st/5th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 24th April 1917. Son of Mr & Mrs Thomas Ellement, of Halfway House, St Thomas, Stafford. Enlisted before he was 18 years old, in to the Yeomanry in August 1914,before being transferred to the infantry and attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment. Prior to enlisting he was employed by Mr Johnson of Hanyards. Ellement was killed instantancously by a shell while on duty with his Lewis gun. Buried in Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Plot XIX. Row F. Grave 1.

Extract from Staffordshire Advertiser - Saturday 23 June 1917, page 4:

An official intimation has been received Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Ellement, of the Halfway House, St. Thomas’, Stafford, that their third son, Henry Vic Ellement, was killed in action on April 21 last. Pte. Ellement , who enlisted in the Yeomanry in August. 1914, before he was 18 years of age, was afterwards transferred to the infantry and attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment. Before enlisting he was employed by Mr. Johnson, of the Hanyards. The officer of his company, in a letter to his parents, says Pte. Ellement was killed instantaneously by a shell while on duty with his Lewis gun. With a kindly touch of felling, he adds :—“ My heart felt sore for the boy—he was sucha youngster and a nice, lovable lad.”
GILL George William

Private 32035, 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed 16th June 1917, aged 25 years. Mr & Mrs Gill of Tixal Lodge. Gill was employed by Mr Frank Dodd of Knypersley prior to the war, then went to work at the Ingestre Stables, he then enlisted in the A.S.C. Remount Department and went to France, then returned to England for infantry training due to his transfer to the Northumberland Fusiliers. No known grave. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 2 & 3.

Extract from Staffordshire Advertiser - Saturday 25 August 1917, page 4:

TIXALL SOLDIER KILLED.

Mr. and Mrs. Gill, of the Tixall Lodge, have received official intimation that their son, Pte. Geo. W. Gill, of the Northumberland Fusiliers, was killed in action on June 16. Before the war he was working with Mr. Frank Dodd, of Knypersley, near Uttoxeter. He afterwards went to the Ingestre stables, where he was engaged with the remounts, and then he enlisted in the A.S.C. Remount Department and went to France. After spending several months with is unit he was ransferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers and cam to England for infantry training. He was home for short leave in December last before returning to France. He attained the age of 25 last May.

HARRISON William
Notts and Derby Regiment as listed on Memorial, but unable to find which one on CWGC. In th 1901 census he was aged 27, born Tixall, Staffordshire, a Cowman, boardind at Tixall, Stafford, Staffordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 36, born Tixall, Staffordshire, a Labourer on farm, boarding at Tixall Stafford, Ingestre Tixall, Staffordshire.
TOWERS Harry
Private 9644, 1st Battalion, Border Regiment, killed 28th June 1915 in the Dardanelles, aged 23 years . Son of Mrs E. Weston, of Halfway House, St Thomas, Stafford. No known grave. Commemorated at the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 120 to 126.
WALKER Edward Alfred
Private 22359, 8th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, died 18th November 1916, aged 20 years. Son of Alfred and Mary Ann Walker, of 33 Weston Road., Littleworth, Stafford; husband of Annie Walker. No known grave. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 14B and 14C.
