BARROW WAR MEMORIAL

The Barrow War Memorial is situated on the village green in Barrow. It takes the form of an Portland stone obelisk mounted on a lipped plinth with a three-stepped base surrounded by an iron link fence on concrete pillars. There are 33 names for World War 1 and 11 for World War 2. The face to the memorial was reonvated by being recut in 1990. The original memorial was unveiled on 28th December 1920 by Captain Owen A Clark; the builders were Messrs. H G Neville & Son. Details appeared in the Bury and Norwich Post 3rd December 1920.

Born Barrow, Suffolk, enlisted Bury St. Edmunds. Baptised as Harry Wallis 21 September 1889 in Barrow, All Saints, son of Sarah Jane Wallis. Son of Mrs. Sarah Jane Jolly, of 6, Meadow Row, Barrow, Bury St. Edmund's. Suffolk. In the 1901 census he is listed as Harry JOLLY, aged 11, born barrow, Suffolk, son of George and Sarah J Jolly, resident 6, Meadow Row, Barrow, Thingoe, Suffolk. In the 1911 census he is listed as Harry JOLLY, aged 21, born Barrow, Suffolk, a Tailor's presser mantle factory, son of George and Sarah J Jolly, resident Barrow, Suffolk. His mother Sarah Jane Wallis married George Jolly in the April to June Quarter 1891 in Thingoe Registration District, Suffolk, at least two years after his birth. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 C and 2 A.

Extract of Distinguished Conduct Medal Citation from London Gazette 11 March 1916:

13922 Private J.W. Lyes, 5th Bn., G. Guards (formerly 2nd Bn.)
For conspicuous gallantry when advancing through a shower of bombs up the enemy trench. He greatly contributed to our success by untiring and accurate bomb-throwing throughout the night, both in the advance and during the enemy's counterattacks. On another occasion, when in reserve, he volunteered to go forward and help the company holding the barricade, and was severely wounded while doing so.

Died from woundsoff the Cocos Islands in action against the German Cruiser "Emden," 9 November 1914. Aged 23. Son of Edward and Edith Sharpe of Barrow. Born 14 November 1891 in Barrow, Suffolk.
