The
Warlingham War memorial faces north on Warlingham Green, Limpsfield
Road, Warlingham, Surrey. It takes the form of a three-stepped base
surmounted by a square plinth and a figure of a serviceman protecting
a mother and child who shelter beneath him. The inscription can be found
on the sides of the plinth with an added tablet for the Second World
War placed at the base. The memorial was orginally unveiled by Major
General Sir Gerald Elliston, K.C.M.G., C.B., 4 December 1921 and rededicated
in 1946. Although the memorial bears inscriptions for World War 2 there
are 60 names listed for World War 1 only. The memorial was repaired
in 2019 and a series of photographs
are available on a separate page.
Overview
At the end of WWI, many cities, towns, and villages, set up committees
to oversee the construction and funding of War Memorials to remember
those from their locality who had perished in the Great War.
Warlingham
was no exception and the Committee was set up in January 1919, comprising
of elected representatives from the Church, Parish Council, Trading
and Farming communities.
Three
designs were considered, the successful one chosen was by J E Taylerson
and entitled ”Shielding the Defenceless”, now the funds
had to be raised. By the end of the year £250 had been collected
locally, and the required target was to be a little more than £500.
In advance
of the work being carried out, during January 1920 the colours of
the 17th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, were paraded with 200 troops for
the last time prior to being laid up in the church as the Battalion
had been disbanded. On the same occasion the Battalion presented to
the village, a Field Gun, which they had capture at the battle of
Cambrai. This gun was place on the Green on a platform immediately
behind where the stone seat is located.
By 1921
all monies required had been raised and on 4th December the Memorial
was unveiled at a lengthy service of dedication, well attended, and
supported by the Warlingham Brass Band, Choirs, Buglers, Scouts and
Guides.
During
WW I, and prior there had been a tradition of Services held on the
Green, but now with a new War Memorial there was a focus to these
Remembrance Day events.
The Memorial
was created with four panels, two of which list the names of 60 men
from Warlingham, who perished during the War; reading the names now
one is reminded of the families that played a key part in our village
at that time.
At the
end of WW2, an additional tablet was added to the Memorial, however
without individual names of those from Warlingham who gave their lives
in that conflict. A further tablet was added to commemorate all those
who made the supreme sacrifice in all conflicts since 1945, again
without any individual names.
The Royal
British Legion has since the early days organised the event, again
the Band in evidence on these occasions.
During
the last few years the Warlingham Branch of the Royal British Legion,
had seen it’s membership role decline and with the loss of their
Clubhouse on the Limpsfield Road, organising the Remembrance Day Parade
had become increasingly difficult. Finally in 2006 they announced
that they could no longer cope and the Parade may have to lapse.
However
there were sufficient people involved already in the Village, who
were not from the British Legion, to form an ad hoc Committee to review
what might be done, and as a result The Parish Council has agreed
that the Committee will become a part of Parish Council “ Business
as Usual” thereby ensuring the secure future of our Remembrance
Service on the Green for the foreseeable future.
Currently
the Parade starts each year form the Scout Hut in Mint Walk and marches
to the Green just before 11:00, where in recent years some 500 people
have gathered for the Service involving all the churches in Warlingham.
After the two minute silence, the wreath laying , all the names are
read out as act of remembrance for those who paid the ultimate price
for our way of life today, the parade reforms and marches back to
the Scout Hut, where it is dismissed; tea, coffee and biscuits being
available as a warm welcome, especially if the morning has been a
cold one.
The Remembrance
Day Service this year is on Sunday November 9th, and with British
Forces currently involved in various conflicts around the world, will
make this day even more relevant.

Remembrance
Service
Over
recent years, probably because of the increasing world turmoil and
the UK’s Armed Forces commitment in a number of conflicts across
the globe, attendance has increased at this moving, and emotional
service; estimated numbers last year were close to 600 people, demonstrating
clearly, in our village we are still a caring community. With significant
numbers of young people in attendance, many in the Scout and Guide
parade contingents; this will continue to be a major annual gathering
for the foreseeable future.
The
Act of Remembrance, during the 2009 Service, saw 17 wreathes laid
in tribute at the War Memorial these were from:
Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Team, Pepper Family, Women's Institute
(Evening), CR6, Tandridge District Council, Girlguiding UK - Warlingham
District, 1st Warlingham Scout Group, 2nd Hamsey Green Group Scouts,
Warlingham Parish Council, Peter Ainsworth MP, RBL Warlingham Branch,
Warlingham Village Primary School, Royal Air Forces Association, Rowland
Bros Funeral Directors, Methodist Church, All Saints Church, St Ambrose
Church
The
War Memorial has 60 names of Warlingham men who gave their lives in
the First World War (although there are records of an additional two
names that are read out at the Service), for the Second World War
there are no individual names inscribed on the memorial but 49 names
from this conflict are read out in remembrance too.
In
addition the Memorial has a tablet added after WWII, to commemorate
those from Warlingham who fell in all conflicts since the end of that
conflict, however there are, currently, no names associated any later
conflicts; neither the Warlingham Churches, nor Warlingham British
Legion have any knowledge of Warlingham residents paying the ultimate
sacrifice, from 1945 up to recent times. The Remembrance Day Committee
would like to hear from anyone who may have any further information
which may be relevant so the War Memorial and Remembrance Service
can be brought up to date.
Another
feature of the day is the Band who many people will have seen leading
the Parade and playing at the Remembrance Service, but perhaps few
will know much about them:
The
Band was formed in 1932 by 1st Warlingham Scouts as a Scout Band.
The Warlingham Old Scouts Association (now called the Warlingham B.-P.
Scout Guild) was formed in 1945 when former Scouts and band members
returned from the War. Until very recently they were known as the
Flute Band of the Warlingham B.-P. Scout Guild.
In
1952 the Corps of Drums of the 285 Squadron ATC Old Cadets Association
amalgamated with the Scout Guild Flute Band and in 1959, in response
to many requests, Girl Guides were allowed to join the Band. However,
today there is no formal connection with the Scout Association.
Each
year the Band holds an annual concert in Warlingham and participates
in a number of parades, including Caterham Carnival Procession, the
Lord Mayors Show, Warlingham Christmas Lights Lantern Procession,
plus leading the Warlingham Remembrance Sunday Parade.

A WARLINGHAM OFFICER KILLED. Deep sympathy is
felt in Warlingham for Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Hewett, of " Waterfield,"
in the heavy bereavement they have sustained by the death of their
son, Capt. E. Geoffrey Hewett, the 2/4th Queen's R.W. Surrey Regiment
(T.F.). The deceased young officer joined the Queen's after the
outbreak of war, and went with the Composite Battalion (formed
from the 4th and 5th Queen's) to the Dardanelles. He took part
the famous fight at the Suvla Bay landing, and was wounded. He
was in hospital at Cairo, and on recovery returned to his regiment
on the Gallipoli peninsula. It was officially announced a few
days ago that had been killed in action. The bereavement of the
parents is all the more sad by reasonof the fact that his father
(who Chairman of the Warlingham Parish Council) has been ill for
several months and unable to attend to his business and public
affairs. Their other son, Mr. Robert P. Hewett, is serving in
