Elsted Parish Church War Memorial for 1914-1918 includes Treyford cum Didling. Treyford Church was dismantled in the 1950`s and the “Shepherd’s Church” of Didling is without a Memorial. The 8 local men from this thinly populated and remote farming area have their names recorded on an etched brass tablet which is to be found on the South wall of this recently restored (1952) Downland Church.



Private G/42788, 10th Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers. 37th Division. Died 2nd February 1917. Aged 19. Son of George & Amy Ayling of Philliswood near East Marden. Born in Elsted & enlisted in Chichester. Buried in Merville Communal Cemetery Extension. F. 346

Private G/14180, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division. Died of wounds 6th August 1917. Born in Elsted & enlisted in West Lavington. Buried in Aeroplane Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium B. 88


Frederick George

Possibly Private 25127, 4th Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment. 63rd Division. Killed in action on the Ancre 13th November 1916. Aged 19. Son of Mr. Harris & Mrs. Anne Harris of Church Cottages, Campton, Bedfordshire. Born in Campton, Beds & enlisted in Ampthill. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial MR. 21 - Connection with Elsted unknown



[Listed on CWGC as Moseley E. H.] Private 34417, 12th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. 5th Division. Killed in action 4th October 1917. Aged 37. Son of Charles & Betsy Moseley of Treyford. Born in Chithurst & enlisted in Chichester. Buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium B. 112


Norman Harvey

Lance Sergeant 117449, 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles (British Columbia Regiment). Killed in action 29th September 1918 Aged 29. Son of Simeon & E. E. Noel of Hillands Farm, East Marden, West Sussex. Buried in Cantimpre Canadian Cemetery, Cambrai.


Alfred Thomas

Private 34965, 1/4th Battalion, The Norfolk Regiment. 54th Division. Died in Palestine 26th July 1918. Aged 19. Son of Alfred Urry & Ellen Rose Urry (later Stillwell) of Philliswood, East Marden. Born in Kilburn, London & enlisted in Chichester. Buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Palestine



Private 21516, 11th Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment. 41st Division. Died of wounds in Belgium 1st August 1917. Born in Buriton, Hampshire & enlisted in Winchester. Next of kin residents of Petersfield, Hampshire. Buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium B. 11.



Private G/8752, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action at High Wood 20th August 1916. Born in Fontmell Magna, Dorset & enlisted in Midhurst. Resident of Elsted. Next of kin later of Ditchingham, Norfolk. Included on the Memorials at Fontmell Magna & Motcombe (Dorset). Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial MR. 21
