Detailed information for World War 1 & 2
Compiled and Copyright © Martin Edwards 2012

The Rothwell war memorial is to be found at the junction of Oulton Lane and Gillett Lane, Rothwell. It takes the form of a serviceman standing wtih head bowed and rifle reversed mounted on a plinth that stands on a square foure-stepped base. There are 100 names listed for World War 1 and 39 for World War 2 on the sides of the memorial. The memorial was first unveiled 11 November 1923, it cost £544 7s to erect the memorial; Stainer bros. were the masons. The land upon which the memorial stands was given free by Major H.W. Calverley. In 1988 the memorial was listed as a Grade II Listed Building. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order within conflict.

Extract from Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Monday 12 November 1923, page 8:

Orphan Unveils Memorial.

The unveiling ceremony of the Rothwell, near Leeds, War Memorial was performed yes terday an orphaned girl, Hanah Bray, whose father was killed in the war, who is now cared for by the Union Rothwell Haigh Children’s Home. She was assisted by Major-General Kennedy, commanding the 49th West Riding Division, who afterwards said Yorkshire had supplied 92 battalions for service overseas, and when we heard so much of what other parts of the Empire had done it was well to remember what Yorkshire had done.
