The Malta Memorial is situated in the area of Floriana and is easily
identified by the Golden Eagle which surmounts the column. It stands
just outside the main entrance to Valletta in Ir-Re Dwardu VII, Floriana.
The Malta Memorial commemorates almost 2,300 airmen who lost their lives
during the Second World War whilst serving with the Commonwealth Air
Forces flying from bases in Austria, Italy, Sicily, islands of the Adriatic
and Mediterranean, Malta, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, West Africa, Yugoslavia
and Gibraltar, and who have no known grave. The Memorial was unveiled
by The Queen on 3 May 1954. The memorial was designed by Sir Hubert
Worthington, R.A., while the eagle which surmounts the column is the
work of the sculptor Charles Wheeler, R.A. The names are listed in groups,
grouped by year, force, rank and name and initials.
The
airmen commemorated at the base of the memorial are listed here in alphabetical
sections. Use the grid below to see a section containing a surname starting
with that letter. Currently the sections are being built and the names
with initials only are being expanded. The details of their deaths are
also being added. This process is a long one and may take sometime to
complete.
All surname
groups have been completed with as much mission information that can
be found. There are no surnames starting with 'X'. There is one South
African that only has initials. Some details are more extensive than
others. To see the type of aircraft listed see 'British
Aircraft World War 2' (a few are not listed but most are).
