He was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 1st August
1942. Meanwhile, on the 3rd October he had proceeded to No.1.
"Y" Depot Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to
the United Kingdom.
Flight Sergeant Hornung arrived at No.3. Personnel Reception
Centre, Bournemouth on the 19th October. After completing
a Beam Approach Course at Swanton Morley, Norfolk during November
he was posted on the 25th November to No. 21 Operational Training
Unit, Moreton-in-the-Marsh, Gloucestershire, and for a short

On the 3rd May, 1942 he was posted to No.15 Operational Training
Unit, Harwell, Berkshire, and proceeded by air to the Middle
East as second pilot of a Wellington aircraft by way of Gibraltar,
and Malta arriving in Egypt on the 25th of the Month. After
a short period at Almaza Transit Camp and the Middle East
Training School he was posted on the 15th June to No.38 Squadron
at Shallufa, Egypt. With this squadron from landing grounds
in the Western Desert as second pilot of Wellington bomber
aircraft, he took part in seventeen operational flights against
enemy targets, comprising two minelaying sorties off Tobruk,
and one off Mersa Matruh, 9 torpedo attacks and 9 bombing
attacks on enemy shipping in the Eastern Mediterranean and
one bombing attack on Tobruk. Early in November 1942 he returned
to No.5. Middle East Training School, Heliopolis, Egypt for

hitting it with 2 torpedoes and sinking it.
Flight Sergeant Hornung was the pilot of a Wellington bomber
aircraft which took off from Luga airfield Malta on the 10th
April, 1943. to carry out an armed search for enemy shipping
between Cape Spartivento and Point Alice on the South East
Coast of Italy.. An S.O.S. was received from a position 90
to 60 miles North of Malta but the aircraft failed to return
to its base and all the crew including Flight Sergeant Hornung
were classified as missing. It is assumed they lost their
lives at sea and in due course Flight Sergeant Hornung was
presumed to have lost his life on the 10th April, 1943.
In September 1943 the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal
to Flight Sergeant Hornung was made known, the citation covering
the award reading as hereunder:-
"FLIGHT SERGEANT HORNUNG HAS PARTICIPATED IN A LARGE
NUMBER OF STRIKES AGAINST ENEMY SHIPPING AND HAS OBTAINED
EXCELLENT RESULTS. IN JANUARY 1942, WHILE ATTACKING ENEMY
SHIPPING OFF SICILY, HE RELEASED TWO TORPEDOES, AT LEAST ONE
OF WHICH STRUCK A MERCHANT VESSEL, WHICH BURST INTO FLAMES
AND SPLIT IN TWO. DURING THIS ATTACK, THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBJECTED
TO AN INTENSE BARRAGE FROM THE MERCHANT SHIP AND ITS DESTROYER
ESCORT. FLIGHT SERGEANT HORNUNG HAS INVARIABLY DISPLAYED EXCEPTIONAL
COOLNESS AND SKILL, AND HAS PROVED TO BE A RELIABLE AND COURAGEOUS
CAPTAIN."
One other New Zealander was included in the crew of the aircraft,
W/O/ A. J. Milner of Mosqiel.
